Description	:	HELENA - Army veteran Garfield O. Munson, 87, a former coach and superintendent of schools, died of natural causes Saturday in Helena. Garfield was born in 1922 to Oscar and Gina Munson in Dodson. He graduated from Dodson High School and attended Northern Montana College prior to entering the U.S. Army in World War II. During the war, he served as a master sergeant in England, France and Belgium. Following World War II, Garfield returned to Dodson, where he taught school and coached athletics. Munson, 87, a former coach and superintendent of schools, died of natural causes Saturday in Helena. Garfield was born in 1922 to Oscar and Gina Munson in Dodson. He graduated from Dodson High School and attended Northern Montana College prior to entering the U.S. Army in World War II. During the war, he served as a master sergeant in England, France and Belgium. Following World War II, Garfield returned to Dodson, where he taught school and coached athletics. In 1948, he married Pauline Mehlhoff. In 1953, they moved to Drummond, where Garfield taught history and business, and coached athletics. In 1957, his basketball team won the state class "C" basketball championship. After achieving a master's degree in education from the University of Montana, Garfield went on to serve as superintendent of schools in Drummond for 21 years. He also served on the Montana High School Board of Directors from 1969-74. In 1979, Garfield and Pauline moved to Helena, where he worked for the Highway Patrol and retired in 1985. Garfield is survived by his wife; three children; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters. He was a member of Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 125, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 276. Complete obituary published in Great Falls Tribune on 6/24/2009
