He was born in Keyrock, West Virginia, on November 14, 1927, the son of the James Lester and Viola Adkins Oliver. He is survived by his wife, Melda Oliver of Gordonsville; one son, Jerry Oliver and his wife, Edith, of Gordonsville; two daughters, Linda Hill and her husband, Dale, of Gordonsville, Iris Wright and her husband, Tommy, of Gordonsville; brothers, Ted Oliver of West Virginia and Alvin Oliver and wife, Maryann, of New Jersey; a sister, Betty Webber of West Virginia; grandchildren, Todd Oliver and wife, Theresa, Bridgette Williams and husband, Chris, Brent Wright and wife, Elizabeth, Brandi Shumake and husband, Mike, all of Gordonsville, Virginia, Elaine Seale and husband, Delmer, Kimberly Perry and husband, Phil, Ashley Mahieu, all of Orange, Virginia, Stephen Hill and wife, Elizabeth, of Charlotte, North Carolina, Stacy Snell and husband, Nathan, of Wilmington, North Carolina; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by sisters, Irene Cable and Sylvia Pack; and brothers, Blaine, Earl, Delford, Ed, Virgil and Frank Oliver. Garland was self-employed for many years and then, later retired from the Orange County School system. Garland dedicated his life in service to The Gordonsville Pentecostal Holiness Church where he was a founding member. He served 21 years on the church board and in various other offices. He played music for 51 years at his church. He physically and financially supported every facet of church work. His church and his family were the loves of his life. He was a United States Army veteran and served two years in Tokyo, Japan with First Calvary Division. He was proud to serve his country. Funeral services were held Sunday, September 11, 2011, at the Preddy Funeral Chapel in Gordonsville with interment at Maplewood Cemetery conducted by the Reverend Shawn Edwards and the Reverend Brenda Hutchinson. The family received friends from Saturday, September 10, 2011, at the funeral home.
