Description	:	Garret Merril (Tom) Vanderbeek was born on the family farm in the rural Panama, Lancaster County, Nebraska area. He received his elementary education at Solon Country School in Otoe County Nebraska. He lived with his father and brother Adolph on the family farm after his mother's death and participated in farming at an early age. He enlisted on July 20th 1942 in the U. S. Read More	Garret Merril (Tom) Vanderbeek was born on the family farm in the rural Panama, Lancaster County, Nebraska area. He received his elementary education at Solon Country School in Otoe County Nebraska. He lived with his father and brother Adolph on the family farm after his mother's death and participated in farming at an early age. He enlisted on July 20th 1942 in the U. S. Navy and served until the end World War II. After basic training he was assigned as a gunner on merchant tankers and saw service in the Pacific theater of war and traveled extensively throughout the Pacific. When his Pacific tour of duty was complete he was assigned to serve as a gunner on a merchant marine freighter in the Atlantic theater of war and made many trips between the United States, Europe, North Africa and the Mediterranean. He visited many countries during his time in the U. S. Navy. A short list is Australia, New Zealand, Egypt, the near east, North Africa, England, France and several trips through the Panama Canal. Following his discharge he returned to Nebraska, purchased a new John Deere tractor and resumed farming near Panama, Nebraska. Garret Merril (Tom) Vanderbeek and Vonia Mae TenHulzen, daughter of Albert TenHulzen and Bertha Kroese,were married in 1944 at the Pella Reformed Church in Adams, Lancaster County, Nebraska. They married while Tom was home on leave from the Navy. When he was released from the service they rented the farmstead located at 176th street and Panama road, SE corner while a new set of farm buildings were under construction on land they had purchased one mile east across the road west from the Vanderbeek family farm where he grew up. Later in life farming operations were turned over to their son Tom. They lived in Panama, Lancaster county, Nebraska in retirement. He was a member of the Pella Reformed Church, rural Adams, Nebraska. He loved getting together with family and friends and never turned down a game of pitch.
