Born Apr 23, 1922, at Woodland Ave., Athens, he was the son of the late Hollie M. & Lenore B. Secoy Hudnell. He attended The Plains High School, where he played varsity football and was proud to have been coached by Ed Rannow. He graduated in 1941. He attended first grade at Mechanicsburg Elementary School in Athens and the remainder of elementary school in Luhrig. Garrett enlisted in the Navy on Oct. 3, 1942 and was assigned to the U.S. Naval Armed Guard and served in both Theaters of Operation during WW II. He earned the American Area Ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon, the European African Ribbon with one star, and the Good Conduct Medal. He served until Nov. 4, 1945 and attained the rank of Petty Officer Second Class. He lived in the Athens County community of Union for over 50 years. He was a member of K.T. Crossen Post 21, American Legion, Athens and VFW Post 8804, New Marshfield. He attended Ohio University. Garrett retired from Litton Industries in 1984 after 33 years of service. During his time there, he served as a union officer, including secretary, treasurer, and president. He married Della Belle Carder Hudnell, who passed away on Dec. 21, 2001. Garrett is survived by their children, Roger (Patty) Hudnell of Olympia, Wash., Becky (Curt) Heady of Athens; Mike (Peggy) Hudnell of Shelton, Wash., and Jeff (Gerry) Carder of New Marshfield; six grandchildren, Roger Hudnell Jr. of Olympia, Wash., Jennifer (Kevin) Fausnaugh of Powell, Jessica (Robert) Petteys of Olympia, Wash., Kelly (Chris) Thomas of Lacey, Wash., Stephen (Jackie) Carder of Buchtel and David (Amy) Carder of Athens; four great-grandchildren, Colten Hudnell of Olympia, Wash., Julie Fausnaugh of Powell and Kayla and Justin Carder of Athens; three brothers, Jack (Marge) Hudnell of Athens, Rudolph (Angela) Hudnell of Marion and Sherman (Linda) Hudnell of Lancaster; a sister, Edna (Larry) Bailey of Haines City, Fla., Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and spouse, he was preceded in death by brothers, Holly and Victor; sisters, Rose and Della Mae; a son, Gary Blair and a grandchild, Charity Lynn Heady. Funeral service will be conducted on Friday at 1 p.m. at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home, Athens with Pastor David Cogar officiating. Burial will be in New Marshfield Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Military Rites will be conducted by K.T. Crossen Post 21 American Legion, VFW Post 3477 and VFW Post 9893 Honor Guards at the cemetery.
