Description	:	Garrett Henry Navis, oldest son of William and Dena Harmelink Navis was born on March 15, 1891 at Long Island, Kansas, and passed away on October 10, 1987 at the Belleville Health Care Center in Belleville, KS, at the age of 96 years, 6 months and 25 days. Read More	Garrett Henry Navis, oldest son of William and Dena Harmelink Navis was born on March 15, 1891 at Long Island, Kansas, and passed away on October 10, 1987 at the Belleville Health Care Center in Belleville, KS, at the age of 96 years, 6 months and 25 days. He attended Long Island High School and grew to manhood on his father's farm. In 1913 he entered the Railway Mail Service for a number of years with headquarters in Kansas City, MO. On June 6, 1917, he was united in marriage to Nellie Dieleman of Prairie View, KS, and to this union two children were born, William I. and Mary L. They later moved to Long Island, KS, where he was a manager of the Farmer's Cooperative Store for a number of years. They then moved to Byron, NE, where he started a store of his own. He had a friendly disposition and was always active in church, Sunday School and served on the school board while there. In 1937, they moved to Chester, NE, where they operated a general store and frozen food locker. He was elected president of the State Bank of Chester and served in that capacity. He also served on the school board for years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Chester. He was active there in the church and Sunday School and in all community affairs. He had a cheerful and optimistic nature as a business man, he was honest and highly respected by all who knew him. He was a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his son, William I. Navis and wife Eleanor of Belleville, KS; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Hill and her husband Everett of Longmont, CO; three grandsons, John and Bill Navis of Belleville, KS; Joel Navis of Seward, NE; three granddaughters, Jean Engel, Silver City, N.M., Shirley Brenner of Berthoud, CO, Patricia Drieth of Longmont, CO; eight great-grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends. Services were held at the United Methodist Church of Chester, NE, on Tuesday, October 13, 1987 at 10:30 a.m., conducted by the Reverend Truman Bachenberg. Mrs. Pauline Frye was organist and Mrs. Cindy Tipton soloist. Pallbearers were John Navis, Bill Navis, Joel Navis, Rodney Peake, Jim Williams and Chris Frye. Interment was made in the Chester Cemetery.
