He was the son of Delmar and Helen (Gajer) Holiday. He was raised in Pittsburgh, PA and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1960. Gary served in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1964. While being stationed in San Diego, California, Gary met Julia Beem. They would be united in marriage on November 16, 1962, in San Diego. The couple made their home in Shell Rock. He was the son of Delmar and Helen (Gajer) Holiday. He was raised in Pittsburgh, PA and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1960. Gary served in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1964. While being stationed in San Diego, California, Gary met Julia Beem. They would be united in marriage on November 16, 1962, in San Diego. The couple made their home in Shell Rock. Gary then attended and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa. He worked for Carnation in Waverly until 1971 and then joined the State Farm Family where he was an agent just under 47 years, retiring this past winter. Gary loved being a part of the Shell Rock Community. He served as Mayor for eight years and on the City Council for ten years. He was also a member of the Shell Rock Cemetery Board, Shell Rock Development Corporation, former member of Jaycees, and helped with the Northeast Iowa Food Pantry. Gary enjoyed spending time with family and friends, golfing, fishing, playing cards, traveling, dining with their potluck friends, and morning coffee downtown. He was “Pittsburgh Proud” and loved cheering on the Steelers. Gary’s memory is honored by: his wife, Julie Holiday of Shell Rock, Iowa; son, Scott Holiday of Fremont, Indiana; daughter, Aimee (Brad) Wedeking of Fruitland, Iowa; three grandchildren, Allie Holiday, Brian Hinrichs, and Kelli Hinrichs; and two sisters; Penny (George) Stash of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Joan Marchetti of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was preceded in death by his parents and a nephew, Brad Beem. Gary has been cremated. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 26, at Faith Lutheran Church in Shell Rock with Pastor Jon Hennings officiating. Shell Rock American Legion giving honors. Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 26, at Faith Lutheran Church from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Private burial of cremains will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Gary’s family Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Shell Rock assisting the family with arrangements.
