COUNTY HISTORY: Brief History of Poweshiek County, Iowa In 1842, a treaty was signed by the US Government and the Sac and Fox Indian tribes, opening up the area now encompassing Poweshiek County to settlement. It was first a part of Keokuk County, later part of Iowa County and then part of Mahaska County before being officially designated Poweshiek County on April 3, 1848. It is named after Chief Poweshiek of the Sac and Fox Tribes. Chief Poweshiek was known as the "Peaceful Indian", having signed the Treaty that ended the Black Hawk War. Iowa officially became a state in 1846. The first permanent settlers arrived in May 1843: Richard B. Ogden and his wife in the southern part of the county and Henry Snook and his wife and eight children settled in the northern part. A steady stream of settlers followed. The settlement of the county progressed generally from south to north. The county seat of Montezuma was selected in the southern part of the county because at the time, it was felt the northern portion of the county would not be settled. The county first had three townships: Sugar Creek, Jackson, and Bear Creek. These were later subdivided and the eventual sixteen townships now in existence were formed, adding: Chester, Deep River, Lincoln, Grant, Jefferson, Scott, Malcom, Warren, Union, Madison, Washington, Pleasant, and Sheridan. [Click to go to Townships page.] Originally, nine schools were designated for each township. Montezuma was designated the county seat in June 1848, and the first courthouse was built in that year. The present courthouse was begun in 1856, and is said to be the second oldest courthouse still in use in Iowa. It has been enlarged in recent years, in the same style, and is currently on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1856, a contingent of Mormon settlers, migrating from Nauvoo, IL to Utah crossed Iowa including Poweshiek County. One of the settlers sons, Job Wellington, Jr. is buried near the present town of Malcom. The settlers traveled pulling handcarts. Jackson Township--------Jackson Township is the largest township in the county, being 6x8 miles. It is named after General Andrew Jackson. The town of Montezuma was platted in 1848, and designated the county seat, which it remains. Gideon and Isaac G. Wilson purchased lots and became the first residents of Montezuma. The first newspaper in the county was originally published by John Cassidy in 1856. It is the Montezuma Republican and is still in publication. Lon H. Boyston established the Montezuma Democrat in 1877, which was later sold and became the Palladium. The first doctor was H. Clay Sanford, who came in 1851. The first marriage was that of Catherine Wilson and James McIntire. Their daughter, Catherine, was the first birth in the township. W.A. Bryan opened a coal mine on Buck Creek. The Methodist Church was organized in 1849, with the Rev. James B. Johnson as the first pastor. The Presbyterian Church was organized in 1856. The Christian Church was organized in 1863, with the Rev. N.A. McConnell as the first pastor. FAMILY REUNION: There was a happy gathering at the home of father and mother Bogard, near Forest Home, Sunday, it being a family reunion. These excellent old people had looked forward to the event with considerable interest, so when Sunday came, joy came with it, for their children were to return on that day. Jasper Bogard is 90 years old and his wife, Rebeca, is 82. They are both in the best of health. The children present were; Cornelius, aged 63, Avoca, Neb; Henry Clay, 61, Stockton, Kan; John, 59, Mary J. Adkins, 56, Joseph, 47, Jacob, 43, all of Forest Home; Ezekiel, 53, Oskaloosa, Iowa. Two of the girls were not present. These were Lutetia Redding, of Goodrich, Kansas and Nancy Sturm of Brandford, Ill. The total age of those present was 554. Given under my hand this 12th. day of May 1825. Daniel Clark J. P. OBITUARY: Gasper Bogard was born in Ohio, November 2, 1800. Was united in marriage to Rebecca Nicholas in 1825. A large family blessed their home, seven of who, five boys and two girls, together with his aged and faithful companion, still survive him. From Ohio he moved to Stark Co, IL, in the year 1855. About thirteen years ago he moved to Poweshiek Co, Iowa and settled on a farm near Forest Home, where he remained until his long life ended, dying after a short illness December 13, aged 90 years, one month and 11 days. It was hard for mother Bogard to say farewell, and to realize that a union of sixty-five years had been broken. Fifty-five years ago he united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. When he came to Illinois he joined the United Brethren Church and continued in that communion until his labors ended. He was highly respected by his neighbors and a consistent Christian. His funeral was largely attended. And thus the righteous die, leaving behind them a bright example and a blessed testimony. The funeral was preached at the late home of the deceased, Monday, by Rev. J. L. Scott, who is an old friend of the family. There was a large attendance indicative of the respect and esteem in which he was held.
