CHURCH: Church and Family History Research Assistance for Stark County, Illinois CHURCH: SPOON RIVER On August 15, 1853, the Spoon River Church of Regular Predestinarian Baptists was organized at Modena, about ten miles east of Toulon. Among the founders of the church were Archibald Vandike, Charles Vandike, Martha Vandike, Eleanor Vandike, William J. Fellingham, George Beall, Benjamin Newton, Jane Newton, David Potter, Robert Sharer, Phoebe Sharer, and Zarah Newton. On October 1, 1856, the new meeting house at Modena was opened, the meetings prior to that time having been held in the Franklin Schoolhouse. The record of the church closes in 1877, although the church continued to hold meetings for several years after that date. Elder James B. Chenowith served as pastor from 1853 until August 1866. He was followed by Elder William A. Thompson, Elder Dillon, Elder Orin S. Thompson, and Elder Smith Ketchum. We would like to obtain a photo of the church building of the Spoon River church, in Modena. COUNTY HISTORY: From--THE CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF AVOCA, NEBRASKA 1882-1982---Cornelius Bogard Family---Cornelius Bogard was born at Findley, Ohio on December 18, 1827. He was married to Lucinda Fisher at Shannon, Ohio on October 16, 1851. There were ten children born to this union, seven girls and three boys. Three girls died in infancy and one teenage daughter, Ermina died after they moved to Avoca vicinity and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Weeping Water. Cornelius Bogard and his three sons farmed one mile north and 1/2 mile east of Avoca. Their daughters Mary and Margaret were married and living in Wyoming, Illinois before the family moved to Cass County. Mary was Mrs. Jason Brown, Erie, Colorado, Margaret was Mrs. Sewell Reed, Weeping Water, Etta married Louis Peters of Avoca (and Otoe) and Charles married Harriett Greenley of Nehawka, Nebraska. William was married to a young school teacher from Wisconsin, Mary Carlisle. John did not marry until after leaving the Avoca Farm. He married Mrs. Mary Moses at Sutherland, Nebraska. Cornelius and Lucinda were energetic respected citizens of the growing Avoca community, where they contributed to its' development in may ways. Lucinda was respected and loved by family and friends. Her obituary stated that she had accomplished much in a life time of fruitful labors. She died after a few days illness on March 8, 1910 at the age of 78 years, 5 months and 26 days. Cornelius moved from Avoca to the farm with his son John, after his wife's death. A granddaughter Mrs. Levi Whitaker and her husband came to help with the farm work and household duties and to care for the aging Cornelius. Cornelius died on April 2, 1917 at the age of 89 years, 3 months and 16 days. John remained at the farm for a few years and then sold the property to the Tefft's. He then moved to Sutherland in Lincoln County, Nebraska where he purchased land. He later married and continued living there until his demise. Charles and his wife moved to Fremont, Nebraska where he was engaged in the oil business. William and his wife Mary continued to live in Avoca. They were the parents of two children, Clyde who was a barber in Avoca and Syracuse (m. Leona Everett of Avoca) and Mae who was a music teacher for a number of years (m. Averill Thomas, made their home in Shenandoah, Iowa, two daughter's, Eileen and Nadine). It is told that as a young school teacher in the Stone Schoolhouse, Mrs. William Bogard (then Mary Carlisle) found herself chief protector of the children when the terrible blizzard of January 12, 1888 descended with such fury. She kept the children at the school throughout that scary night trying to keep courage and comfort the children. William Bogard was postmaster at the Avoca post office for a number of years. There are only great-grandchildren, great nieces and nephews who have a faint remembrance of the elder Bogards who made the long trip from Ohio to Illinois to Iowa and finally to their last home in Avoca, Nebraska. Mr. Bogard was an old settler and will be greatly missed by his relatives and a wide circle of friends in this community. The funeral service were held on Wednesday afternoon at the home of his son John Bogard and the remains laid to rest in the Weeping Water cemetery. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of the community in the loss of their loved one. The children were all present at the funeral except Mrs. Mary R. Brown who resides in Erie, Colorado, who was unable to attend. Three grandsons, Clyde Bogard of Avoca, Roy Bogard of Fremont, Lloyd Peters of Minneapolis and three great grandsons Lemuel Lane, John and Arthur Fitzpatrick of Weeping Water were acting pall beares. Cornelius Bogard was born in Findley, Ohio Dec 18, 1827 and was married to Lucinda Fisher at Shannon, Ohio Oct 16, 1851. To them were born seven girls and three boys. Six children survive them, Mrs. Mary R. Brown of Erie, Colorado, Mrs. Margaret L. Reed of Weeping Water, Charley Bogard of Fremont, Mrs. Etta Peters of Minneapolis, Kansas, John I. Bogard and William H. Bogard of Avoca. Mr. Bogard with his wife and family moved from Ohio to Wyoming, Illinois in 1858 and lived there until September 1878 when they moved to Cass County Nebraska where they have lived until his demise. His wife died March 8, 1910 at the age of 79.
