Description	:	Gavin Hogg was born 1788 in Wick, Caithness, Scotland which is located in the northern most part of the county. He was the eldest of 4 known surviving children (2 boys/2 boys) born to James Hogg and Mary Finlayson. The family first moved to Anstruther on the east coast of Fife, not far from St Andrews the Home of Golf, where Gavin attended school. After coming to this country, Gavin entered the University of North Carolina where he graduated in 1807. He was a member of the Dialectic Society, and in 1808 he was tutor in the University. After this, he taught the late Rt. Rev. Thomas Atkinson's elder brother in Dinwiddie County, Virginia -- during which time he read for the law. Upon obtaining his license to practice, he relocated to the town of Windsor in Bertie County, NC to hang his shingle. As America entered the War of 1812, his views and opinions in opposition to the war were so pronounced and decided, that local public sentiment raged against him and escalated to the point that his life was threatened by a mob in the streets of Windsor. Gavin stationed himself on his front porch with gun in hand and threatened death to the first who should invade his domain. And yet, despite being a federalist and opposed to the war, this Scottish immigrant came to the defense of his new country and served throughout the war commanding a company in Norfolk. After his return from the war it appears his neighbors changed their opinion of him and his practice flourished, evidenced by the fact he had 400 out of 423 cases on one docket, for these same people who had been at one time so embittered against him. On May 22, 1822, the 34-year old attorney married 25-year old Mary Ann "Nancy" Bayard Johnson, daughter of prominent Connecticut attorney, Robert Charles Johnson and his wife, Catherine Bayard. Soon after his marriage, the young couple relocated to Raleigh where Gavin continued to practice the law. Gavin and Nancy had 4 known children, but only one son, Thomas Devereaux Hogg, survived infancy. Gavin Hogg became a successful and well equipped lawyer, and controlled as large and as lucrative a practice as any attorney in the East ever enjoyed. He was a fine criminal lawyer, and performed his duty alike to high and low. When he would appear for a client, charged with theft, or other heinous act. He is remembered today as being bold, aggressive and determined. He would, in strict conscience, prosecute or defend, to the full limit, confining himself strictly and soley to the evidence detailed and no inducement could alter or swerve his convictions. In his speeches to the jury he would frequently ask the court to stop him if he transcended the limits not warranted by the evidence presented. He was a fine advocate, and argued his points of law and evidence clearly, forcibly and intrepidly. In all matters he followed his convictions rigidly and implicitly. He was one of the most positive and determined men the East ever had. He was the principal mover in the building of the Episcopal School at Raleigh. The brick building was not above the first story when he died. His judgment, wisdom and guiding hand being gone, it soon drifted into financial trouble and wound up. He was a particular friend of the late Bishop Ravenscroft, who died at his home. He was a prominent lay delegate always at the triennial conventions. Gavin Hogg was widowed in 1831 when his beloved wife of just 9 years died at age 34. The young widower married for the 2nd time in 1834 to Sarah L. Haywood, the widow of John Gray Blount, of Beaufort County, and daughter of Sherwood Haywood & Eleanor Howard Hawkins. His second marriage was short-lived as Gavin Hogg died in New York on October 28th, 1835 at the young age of 47. His body was returned to NC and he was buried in City Cemetery in Raleigh; however, his body was later re-interred at Oakwood Cemetery, most likely when his 2nd wife died in 1880. Gavin Hogg never held any public office, but was once a candidate for Judge of the Superior Court of law and equity, but was defeated by the late Judge Seawell. His contemporaries described him as a man about five feet ten inches in height, weighing around 190 pounds with a bright complexion,blue eyes, and light hair. At the time of his death it was said "Generations may come and go, but it will be long, indeed, before the East will point with the finger of pride to the sounder lawyer or the abler advocate than the late Mr. Gavin Hogg." His only surviving child, Thomas Devereux Hogg, married Janet Bryan of Raleigh and was father to 3 daughters. They are all buried here at Oakwood.
