Description	:	I took the group picture that I have posted on November 11, 1993, at the Ottumwa VFW Hall. At the time I took this picture, Gay was 101 years old. Read More	I took the group picture that I have posted on November 11, 1993, at the Ottumwa VFW Hall. At the time I took this picture, Gay was 101 years old. He was walking around the place as spry as could be, using neither a walker nor a cane. What an amazing man! There was also a picture of the men, with an article on the front page of "The Ottumwa Courier," of November 12. These five veterans of World War I were honored during a Veterans Day program, and they were presented with medals commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Great War. World War I Veterans standing from left to right are: Lloyd Schaub, John Bosley, Leo Billings and Gay Anderson. Veteran John Gay is seated. Two other Ottumwa World War I Veterans Frank Glover and Leslie Pomroy were unable to attend. In the second picture, Melvin Stonebraker VFW Quartermaster is pinning Gay Anderson's commemorative metal on him, while Veteran John Gay looks on. This was a very special day for these five men and their families, as they were honored for their service. Obituary From "The Ottumwa Courier," November 18, 1994: Gay M. Anderson, 102, of Good Samaritan Care Center died at 4:48 p.m. Nov. 15, 1994, at Good Samaritan Care Center. He was born April 24, 1892, in Hastings, Neb., to Christopher and Eliza Lois Anderson. He married Hattie A. Jones on June 21, 1922, in Ottumwa. She died Aug. 4, 1968. He married Marie Blew on Sept. 8, 1969, in Milan, Ill. She died Dec. 7, 1991. He worked at John Morrell & Co. for 38 years. He was a member of Willard Street United Methodist Church and Local P-1. He was a veteran of World War I and a charter member of the American Legion. He received a centurian award from Gov. Terry Brandstad in 1992. He is survived by four step grandchildren and six step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two stepsons, Richard and Guy Blew. The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Willard Street Methodist Church, the Rev. Don Callen officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery with military services by the VFW and American Legion. Memorials may be made to his church.
