Gayle Carlene Harris was born in McCallsburg, Iowa, on October 10, 1939, the daughter of Tommy and Gladys (Opstvedt) Chelsvig. She graduated from Story City High School in 1957. Gayle married Darrell Harris in Story City on September 1, 1957. In earlier years, Gayle worked as a cashier for Fareway Stores and for Pester Derby in Ames. She then worked as a bookkeeper for Arnold's Fashion Center in Des Moines and Greyhound Accounting Center in the Employee Benefits Department in Des Moines and worked as an insurance clerk for Liberty Mutual Insurance in Des Moines and finally as a customer service representative for Kay's Merchandise in Des Moines. Gayle enjoyed crafts, collecting quilt tops, old vacuum cleaners, and Barbie and Dawn dolls. She also loved flower gardening, especially growing irises and tulips. She loved working with family genealogy, cross stitching, and going to swap meets, auctions, and antique stores. Gayle is preceded in death by her parents and three brothers: Leslie, Joel, and Harley Chelsvig. She is survived by her husband Darrell of Des Moines; a son Lannie Harris and wife Ruth of Apple Valley, Minnesota; two daughters: Laurie Fontana and husband Rick of Des Moines and Lois Harris of Ames; six grandchildren: Adam and Megan Hofer, Gabriel and Anna Harris, Amanda Beveridge and husband Craig and Andrea Daleske and husband Aaron; two step-grandchildren Angela Fontana and Robert Grossman Jr. and wife Angela; a great-granddaughter Audrey Beveridge and a great grandchild due in July; five step-great grandchildren: Christopher and Kayle Mullen, Justin Defrancisco, Alexis McCall, and Lennon Grossman; and several nieces and nephews.
