He was born March 30, 1944, on Chapel Ridge in Switzerland County, to Roy H. and Virginia Mae Alford Richards. He was born March 30, 1944, on Chapel Ridge in Switzerland County, to Roy H. and Virginia Mae Alford Richards. He was raised on the family farm in Switzerland County and was a1962 graduate of Vevay High School. He was united in marriage to Donna Chase on June 16, 1967. He was employed as a machine operator with Cummins Engine Company, working at all of the company’s plants, before retiring after 34 years of service. He was united in marriage to Mary Jo Benfield on June 6, 1988. He was a member of the Kent Christian Church, the Holset Bass Club and the Euchre Club. He enjoyed building, tinkering, woodworking, fishing and gardening. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo Benfield Richards; two daughters, Tina Leas of Lexington and Cate Burton of Lexington, Ky.; one son, Roy Richards of Vevay; one step daughter, Kim Kelley of Madison; one sister, Becky James of North Vernon; one brother, Robert “Bob” Richards of Vevay; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death one son, Ross Allen Richards, who died Aug. 5, 1973; one step daughter, Karen Contratto, who died March 29, 2008; his father, who died Dec. 31, 1989; his mother, who died Nov. 29, 2013; one brother, Jimmy Richards, who died July 2003; and one grandson. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre. Burial will be in Vevay Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home today from 5 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the service. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Alzheimer’s Research. Contributions can be made through the funeral home.
