Born in Burlington, Pennsylvania, he graduated from the US Military Academy in 1831 and served as an officer in the 4th Infantry during the Mexican War. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he was a US Army paymaster when appointed a Brigadier General in November, 1861. He served in the Mississippi campaign and participated in the Battle of Corinth.
