Read More	Gene Eldon Binning, age 90, was born July 21, 1930, to Floyd and Nellie (Beers) Binning on a farm near Grand River, Iowa. He passed away November 29, 2020, at his home. Gene made Grand River home his entire life. He attended country schools and graduated from Grand River High School in 1948. A highlight he talked about through the years was a road trip to California right after graduation with Don Van Laar, Max Greenland, and Don Beardsley. He always kept a picture of this memory in his wallet. On February 15, 1950, Gene was united in marriage to Lavone Briner. Born to them were four children, Janice, Ronnie, Richard, and Joyce. Gene and Lavone spent most of their lives on a farm southeast of Grand River where they raised crops, cattle, hogs, and even turkeys. Gene was a man of many talents - farmer, mechanic, electrician, and a builder of many things such as houses, buildings, farm equipment, the family’s first camper, race cars (forever 65!!!), and a two-seated motorized bicycle (moped) for Ronnie and Rich to ride to baseball practice. In Grand River, he had a hand in building the tennis court, baseball park, rodeo grounds, which over the years he spent countless hours helping make improvements and additions to the facilities, and the community center, which he oversaw from a wish to a reality. He designed, contracted, supervised, and did whatever was needed to see the building was built, and was so proud of it. And, rest assured that none of these things would have happened without his CTS pliers that were always in the pocket of his Big Smith overalls. Gene was active in his community serving on numerous boards throughout his lifetime, including the Grand River Centennial Committee, bank boards, helped with school bonds, a member of the Grand River Betterment Committee, and various agriculture related boards, as well as others. He was a long-time member of the Grand River Lions’ Club. He loved people and could strike up a conversation with anyone willing to chat. He and Lavone loved to travel, sightsee, and most of all make new friends. A favorite pastime in the spring was turkey hunting. And, he was always up for a good pitch or cribbage game. Gene had fun with his kids and grandkids by following their sports teams and activities, going to his watermelon patch, instigating water fights, having fun at the lake, and always looking forward to our annual Christmas shrimp boil. One of the things that Gene was known for was having a hard time keeping secrets, especially around Christmas. Gene married Norma (Fitzgerald) Wookey at the Grand River United Methodist Church on August 3, 1996. They made their home on the north side of Grand River where they enjoyed gardening, fishing, and spending time with family and friends. Gene is survived by his wife, Norma; sister, Norma Greenland of Grand River; sister-in-law, Shirley Dilley of Ellston, Iowa; sons, Ronnie (Linda) Binning and Rich (Fay) Binning of Grand River; daughters, Janice (Bill) Miller and Joyce (Rex) Hoppes of Van Meter, Iowa; eight grandkids, Patrick Miller, Jon Binning, Melissa Bockman, Amber Hill, Jennifer Binning, Brittany Brown, Reid and Grant Hoppes; eight great grandkids; as well as children by marriage, Judy Petersen, Kurt (Sandy) Pierschbacher, Brenda (Max) Boles, and Darren (Shelly) Wookey; nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife of forty-four years, Lavone in 1994; brother, Max; and brothers-in-law, Dean Greenland, Eugene Briner, and Jack Briner; and sisters-in-law, Jo Anne Briner and Linda Briner.
