Mehl, 76, died Saturday, June 2, 2018, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born January 4, 1942, in Eureka, Kansas, to Gilbert and Ruth Ann (Reed) Mehl. Gene graduated from Lorraine High School in 1960. He then joined the United States Air Force, where he served from May 25, 1960 until May 15, 1962. He was a member of American Legion Post #200 in Holyrood and Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Hutchinson. On November 9, 1961, he married Mary Elizabeth Oakes in Harrells, North Carolina. They shared 56 years of marriage. Gene is survived by: wife, Mary Elizabeth Mehl of Hutchinson; son, Gene A. Mehl (Debora) of Hutchinson and their children, Michael Mehl (Cassie), Amy Mehl (Jared Harlow), Mathew Mehl, Lester ‘Tra’ Cape (Angelica), Christopher Cape (Crystal), Adam Cape, Breia Venegas (Mario); daughter, Connie Lynn Bohringer of South Hutchinson and her children, Lorenzo Bohringer (Adrienne), Mikel Bohringer (Chelsey), Shania E. E. J. Bohringer; daughter, Pamela Conklin (Christopher) of Sanford, North Carolina, and their children, Jonathan Conklin (Brooke), Joshua Conklin (Rikki), Christopher Conklin II; numerous great-grandchildren; sister, Betty Beagley of Saxman; and brothers, Don Mehl of New Mexico, Max Mehl of Oklahoma. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Mehl. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, 2018, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, 407 E. 12th, Hutchinson, with the Reverend Henry Blickhahn officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Air Force. Burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Cemetery, Holyrood. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary. Memorials may be made to the church or Hospice House, in care of Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson, KS 67501.
