Description	:	Gene was born in Boyd County, Lynch Nebraska and his family farmed near the Spencer/Gross area where he still owns the farm pasture. He has twin older brothers, Dean and Duane. Read More	Gene was born in Boyd County, Lynch Nebraska and his family farmed near the Spencer/Gross area where he still owns the farm pasture. He has twin older brothers, Dean and Duane. He completed college and joined the Air Force where he served over five years. He is an honored Vietnam Veteran who served foreign services for his country in Germany and South Vietnam as a member of the 377th Civil Engineering Squadron. After serving his country, he then helped build the Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado, and spent several years living near a town called Silver Plume. After that he worked in Wyoming in construction jobs. In the 1980's, Gene moved to Alaska to help build the pipeline across the state. While there, he worked in Anchorage and Fort Yukon in the 1990's for RCA at remote radar sites for the Air Force as a contractor. He is known as the man who knows how to fix just about everything mechanical. Gene enjoyed the peace, quiet and beauty of Alaska so much he decided to stay there permanently and around 1997 he moved to a very small area called Central, Alaska. He built his own house, hanger and a cabin on 15 acres of land. He owned and operated a gold mining business with lots of large machinery. He also would do trapping and hunting in remote areas and has a cabin in the Artic National Wildlife Refuge area. One of his favorite places to fly was over Brooks Range across Northern areas of Alaska into Canada's Yukon territory. Gene has a pilot license, built his own runway and had a classic green airplane he restored and put about every cool feature on it you could imagine. He enjoys the outdoors, flying, mining, hunting, trapping and fishing. Gene loved to take long walks and hikes with his dog. He had a black lab, Bud and then a yellow lab, Butter. He can train dogs to do just about anything, even open the refrigerator and bring you a drink He enjoyed traveling to Hawaii many times over the years. In Makaha Valley he purchased a condo and would travel there to see other friends. He attended his nieces wedding in 2002 in Honolulu and has always been close with his family. There are many fond memories of time spent in Hawaii. Gene has been featured on the Discovery Channel on a show called "The Last Alaskans" flying his Piper airplane into the bush to deliver food and supplies to his friends Heimo Korth and family. He is also mentioned in a book called "The Final Frontiersman." We have always enjoyed the many stories that Gene has shared with family and friends throughout the years. He is a very quiet man with a lot of great adventures. Family members include his brothers Dean (Karen) Hume, Lincoln, and Duane (Linda) Hume, Bruning; nieces and nephews Vonda (Jeff) Hartsell, JoAnna (Jeff) Eckhardt, Brian (Tammy) Hume, and Renee (Randy) Gernandt; great nephews Connor Hartsell and Alex Hume; great niece Abby Hume. Preceded in death by his parents. Memorial Service: 10:00 a.m. Saturday (9-11-21) Roper and Sons South Lincoln Chapel, 3950 Hohensee Drive. Masks are required.
