Description	:	NEWCASTLE - Genevieve C. "Gen" Bender, 82, died July 18, 2001, at Elms Health Care Center, Ponca. Visitation was July 20 at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington, followed by a vigil service at St. Peter's Hall later that evening. Mass of Christian Burial was July 21 at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Newcastle, with Rev. David Liewer officiating. Burial was in St. Peter's Calvary Cemetery, Newcastle. Pallbearers were Rhett Bender, Bryan Bender, Alex Bender, Beau Bender, Dustin Bender, Josh Bender, Todd Bender and Jess Bender. Gen was born Sept 30, 1918, to Joseph Charles and Elizabeth (Schrage) Maly in Howells. Gen's mother, Elizabeth, died in 1920. She moved with her dad and grandparents to Crofton where she attended St. Rose Elementary and graduated from Crofton Public High School in 1936. She attended Briar Cliff College. Gen taught in country schools in Cedar and Knox counties and was a substitute teacher in Newcastle for many years. She married Leonard "Sam" Bender Feb 24, 1941, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Crofton. After her marriage she and Sam farmed at St. Helena, Ponca and Newcastle. They moved to Wynot in 1945 and then north of Newcastle in 1960. They retired in Newcastle in 1966. She belonged to St. Peter's Catholic Church and Altar Society, Newcastle, and Christian Mothers, Wynot. Her interests were crocheting, knitting, sewing, bowling and square dancing. Survivors include her husband, Sam, Newcastle; five sons and their spouses, Dick and Marilyn Bender, Newcastle; Gary and Paul Bender, Sioux City, Iowa; Lyle and Ivette Bender, Boone, Iowa; Leon and Arlene Bender, North Pole, Alaska; Marlin and Sherry Bender, Dakota Dunes, S.D.; eight grandsons, Rhett, bryan, Alex, Beau, Dusty, Josh, Todd and Jess bendeer; four granddaughters, Heidi, Susan, Kate and Samantha; six great-grandchildren, Michael and Allie Bender, Alysa, Kayla Scholz, Nicole Bender and Tyler Taylor; two half-brothers and their spouses, Charles and Mariellen Maly, Crofton; Dr. Ron and Eulalia Maly, Grand Prairie, Texas; two half-sisters and spouse: Virginia Lange, Crofton, and Hilaria "Dickie" and Marlen Burbach, Hartington. She was preceded in death by her parents; baby daughter in 1954; stepmother; two brothers, Jim and Paul Maly; and two sisters, Betty Becker and Geraldine Bruening.
