Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greeley, with the Rev. Donald Buhrman officiating. Burial will be in the Greeley Sacred Heart Cemetery. T.J. (Noonan) Birkby, 88, of rural Greeley passed away Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, at her farm home east of Greeley, with her family by her side. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greeley, with the Rev. Donald Buhrman officiating. Burial will be in the Greeley Sacred Heart Cemetery. T.J. Finn and Sons Funeral Home of Greeley is in charge of arrangements. Genevieve was born, raised and educated near Spalding, one of five siblings. She attended rural country schools and later boarded at Spalding Academy. She went on to attend the College of St. Mary in Omaha before returning to Greeley County. In June 1947 she married Paul Birkby, a loving marriage that lasted 61 years. They lived together on the family farm east of Greeley until Paul's death in 2008. The remainder of her life was spent on the farm with her daughter, Mary Kay. Her most important work/passion was nurturing her family. Farm work was often difficult, but she punctuated the difficulties with many acts of love, such as greeting her children daily after school with fresh cinnamon rolls and visiting with them about their day. She gardened for food and joy, and loved watching God's earth produce a bounty! In later years, she continued to extend her love and kindness to her parents (Frank and Hazel Noonan) and aging siblings (Eileen, Kathleen, Tom and Rosemary), helping them as needed. She herself best described her life by proclaiming, "I didn't miss my calling." With great faith and God's will foremost in her mind, she welcomed each day. She spent many years working full or part time in the Greeley County Courthouse. She drew special satisfaction from her work in the welfare office, where, with pride, she discreetly and joyfully assisted many in need. In her twilight years, she loved the peacefulness of the farm and countryside, sitting on her patio watching the cattle, riding along with her daughter Mary Kay to check the windmill, and taking short day trips. Preceding her in death were her husband, Paul; an infant daughter, Mary Bernadette; and an adult son, Patrick. Her loving memory will be carried forever by her children, William, Paul A., Mary Kay, Pauline, Dorothy Jean, Janet, Joe, Tim and Patricia, along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
