She was the wife of David Garst, a partner in Garst Seed Co. of Coon Rapids, and was a longtime champion of education and health causes. She was the wife of David Garst, a partner in Garst Seed Co. of Coon Rapids, and was a longtime champion of education and health causes. Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 4, at the Coon Rapids High School auditorium with the Rev. Alfred E. Rau of the United Methodist Church of Cooh Rapids officiating. Mrs. Eileen Smith was organist and casket bearers were Winston Huebner, Tom Slaybaugh, Curtis Chrystal, Sam Bukoff, John Grettenberg, Bill Hess, Robert Blincow and Don Rowan. Burial was in Coon Rapids Cemetery under'the direction of Ohde Funeral Home. Mrs. Garst was active in a variety of political and civic organizations for many years. She served as a member and president of the St. Anthony Regional Hospital Board of Trustees for several years and was instrumental in building the new hospital in Carroll. She was a member of the Coon Rapids Community School Board for six years and served as president, was on the Board of Directors at Des Moines Area Community College the past five years, submitting her resignation recently due to ill health. In 1981, Jo received the Coon Rapids Kiwanis Club's Citizen of the Year award. She was active in county and state Democratic party organizations, and ran for the 55th District Iowa House of Representatives seat in 1974, losing by only seven votes. Other activities included service on the Grinnell College Board of Trustees, on former Gov. Robert Ray's task force for efficiency in government, the Coon Rapids Library Board of Trustees, as chairwoman of local and district Red Cross organizations, and as president of the local Federated Women's Cub. She was also active in Girl Scout activities for many years. - Survivors include her husband, David, of Coon Rapids; a daughter, Sally Garst Haerr and husband, Richard, of San Francisco, Ca.; sons Sam and wife Christine of Coon Rapids, James and wife Patricia of Grimes; and one grandson, Matthew Warren Garst. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Archie Orenstein and Cecile Robinson Orenstein of Hilo, Hawaii; a son, Stuart, in 1961, and a brother, Morton, in 1951. Mrs. Garst was born Oct. 9, 1928 in Hilo, Hawaii. She graduated from high school there and received a bachelor's degree in political science from Stanford University in California. She married David Garst on July 12, 1949, in Hilo.
