Stuart was born May 5, 1955, at Carroll and had lived in Coon Rapids all his life. He was to have been a member of the first grade class this fall. Surviving are his parents, David and Georgeann Orenstein Garst; two brothers, Sam and James; one sister, Sally; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Roswell Garst of Coon Rapids and Mr. and Mrs. Archie Orenstein of Los Angeles, California. Relatives and friends who attended from out of town included Mr. and Mrs. Keith B. Merrill, Mr. and Mrs. Keith B. Merrill Jr., James Wallace and Fred Lehman, Des Moines; Mrs. William Shelby, Hampton; Mr and Mrs. L. W. Whitford, Cedar Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Robert Herrak, Lohrville; Mr. and Mrs. Dean Henak, Fort Dodge; Mr. and Mrs. Warren Garst, Jefferson; and Stuart's maternal grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Archie Orenstein, Los Angeles, California. Patrolman Hanson gave this account of the accident. A vehicle and trailer had turned west on the highway from a driveway on the Garst farm. After it had passed the boy started across the road and was struck by a car driven by Charles L. Hutchinson, 35, West Des Moines. Stuart apparently waited on the north side of the highway for the pickup pulling the trailer to pass and then had darted out behind the trailer and into the path of the oncoming Hutchinson car. Hutchinson, who was headed southeast, vainly attempted to stop and his car skidded sideways. The side of the vehicle struck the boy. The car then went into the ditch but did not overturn. Sheriff Al Thorup and Deputy Leonard Hinze, who arrived shortly after the accident, said they learned bystanders had attempted to revive the boy with mouth-to-mouth respiration but were unsuccessful. Patrolman said no charges were filed.
