Description	:	George Adams Stephenson was born Feb. 22, 1851 in Tennessee, the son of William Calvin and Lively (Harber) Stephenson, according to his death certificate. His tombstone indicates he was born in 1852, however. The 1860 Census lists the family as "Stevenson" in Dunklin County, Mo. William Stephenson apparently had died, but Lively lived with George, 8, and five of his siblings. In 1870, Lively and the family had returned to Tennessee with the family listed as "Steavison." George, 18, worked as a farm laborer in Dyer County, living at home with his mother and siblings. He continued as a farm laborer... His tombstone indicates he was born in 1852, however. The 1860 Census lists the family as "Stevenson" in Dunklin County, Mo. William Stephenson apparently had died, but Lively lived with George, 8, and five of his siblings. In 1870, Lively and the family had returned to Tennessee with the family listed as "Steavison." George, 18, worked as a farm laborer in Dyer County, living at home with his mother and siblings. He continued as a farm laborer in 1880 in Crockett County, Tenn., which had been formed partially from Dyer and other neighboring counties in 1871 in west Tennessee. He was living with his mother and siblings listed as "Stevenson" again. George married Sarah Ann Harber Aug. 9, 1884 in Bedford County, Tenn., according to state marriage records. Bedford is in middle Tennessee where his parents had grown up. It's unclear why George had returned. Sarah had been born July 9, 1862 in Tennessee, according to her death certificate. She was the daughter of Sarah Elizabeth (Gilmore) and Jacob Decalb Harber. Her father was the younger brother of her mother-in-law, making her and George first cousins, a common occurrence in the day. The 1900 Census shows George working as a farmer and living with Sarah in Crockett County. They had seven children: Everett Ony, 15; William Thomas, 13; Benjamin Audubon, 10; Leatha Louise, 9; Annie L., 5; George McKinley, 6; and Joseph Wheeler, 1. William Thomas Stephenson married Lela Edna Porter on Aug. 22, 1909 in Crockett County, according to state marriage records. A few days later Everett Stephenson married Lois Missouri Mockbee on Aug. 26, 1909 in neighboring Haywood County, according to Tennessee marriage records. In 1910, George continued farming in Crockett County and living with Sarah. The family is listed as "Stepehenson." "Audubon," 21; Letha, 19; Annie, 16; McKinley, 13; and Joe, 11; remain at home with new family additions: Owen Theodore, 8; Roy J., 5; and Rosie Nelson, 2. Everett and Lois "Stevenson" were listed in Scott County, Mo., with Everett working as a railroad brakeman. They had no children. That same year, Aud Stephenson married Doshia May Emison on Sept. 10, though the state marriage record spells both of their names incorrectly with Aud as "Ard Stevison." Leatha Stephenson married Daniel Jeff Watkins Dec. 27, 1914 in Crockett County, according to state marriage records, which list her as "Lather" and him as "J.D." Everett Stephenson died Dec. 9, 1917 while working for CSX railroad, according to Martha (Wilson) Mann, a descendant of his brother, Benjamin. Everett was leaning out of the train with a lantern to signal the conductor when he was struck in the chest with a metal hook, she said. Lois was pregnant with the youngest of at least four children, Cecil. Everett is buried at Cypress United Methodist Church Cemetery in Crockett County. (Lois died Aug. 23, 1954 in nearby Madison County, Tenn., according to her death certificate, which indicates she also is buried at Cypress.) George Adams Stephenson died Jan. 30, 1918 in Crockett County, according to his death certificate. He is buried at Cypress United Methodist Church Cemetery. Sarah, who worked some as a housekeeper, according to her death certificate, is listed as widowed "S A Stepheson" in the 1920 Census, which indicates she worked as a farmer. Anna, 26; Joe, 20; Owen, 18; Roy, 16; and Rosie, 11; were still in the household. She died Nov. 1, 1921 of "chronic interstitial nephritis," or kidney disease, according to her death certificate. Her Humbolt Courier-Chronicle obituary, posted at http://tn-roots.com/tncrockett/obits/stev-mrsgeo.html, indicates her illness lasted several months. She is buried next to George at Cypress United Methodist Church Cemetery in Crockett County, according to the death certificate, the obituary and findagrave.com. Her will names her son W.T. Stephenson as executor and leaves the bulk of her estate to her living children with $5 each going to the children of her late son, Everett, who is listed as "Eva" in the document.
