Burial will be in the O’Neill Cemetery with Military Rites provided by the O’Neill American Legion Simonson Post 93. Fr. Bernard Starman will officiate. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at Biglin’s Mortuary in O’Neill with a 7 pm Rosary. George passed away on Friday, December 22, 2017 at Avera St. Anthony’s Hospital in O’Neill. George passed away on Friday, December 22, 2017 at Avera St. Anthony’s Hospital in O’Neill. Memorial may be directed to the family for future designation. Biglin’s Mortuary in O’Neill is in charge of arrangements. George Albert Janousek was born in Greeley, Colorado to Lod and Josephine (Ratkovec) Janousek. He moved with his family to O’Neill where he attended St. Mary’s Academy and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1945. George enlisted in the Navy and served on the USS William C. Cole, a Destroyer Escort Ship. After being Honorably Discharged, he moved to Omaha and attended Creighton University. While living in Omaha, George met Gerry Hile, and the couple later married on July 31, 1948 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in O’Neill. They made their home for a time in Omaha before returning to O’Neill. George opened a grocery store, called the 4th Street Market, and ran that for a while. He also operated the Elkhorn Motel and worked for a time with Meadow Gold. George then went to work for First National Bank (known today as Great Western Bank) and worked there for many years before he retired in 1984. George was a man of many talents and skills. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He could often be found hunting with his beloved black labs or cruising the waters with a fishing pole. George was also a good carpenter and remodeled his house. He loved to watch baseball, especially the Kansas City Royals. He was also known to be a bit of a pool shark. He was a life time member of the O’Neill American Legion Simonson Post 93. There he served on the Honor Guard and was recognized for his 70 years of continuous membership. George also served as an O’Neill City Councilman, a past President of the O’Neill Chamber of Commerce, a member of the VFW, a member of the Knights of Columbus, and an active member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. George is survived by his wife of 69 years, Gerry Janousek of O’Neill; six children, Christie Janousek and special friend, Greg Blount, of White Plains, Maryland, Jim Janousek of Leonardtown, Maryland, Greg Janousek and wife, Patty, of Omaha, Joe Janousek and wife, Celia, of O’Neill, Jennifer Koenig of O’Neill, Jackie Anna and husband, Keith, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; nine grandchildren, Jeannie (Tony) Tallent, Brooke (Jim) Heck, Jason (Kelly) Janousek, Ryan Janousek, Elliott Janousek, Hannah Janousek, Carol (Ben) Doolittle, Madeline Anna, Doug Anna; five great grandchildren, Mara Tallent, Coby Doolittle, Henry Janousek, Jack Janousek, and Jay Doolittle; one sister, Mary Ann Schmit of O’Neill; many nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his parents; one son-in-law, David Koenig; one daughter-in-law, Mary (McCabe) Janousek; one sister, Martha (Joe) Beckwith; and one brother-in-law, Ed Schmit.
