ULYSSES, May 30 – George Allen Spelts, a veteran of the war for the Union, who passed away at his home in Ulysses on May 19, was an early settler of Butler county, settling on a homestead near where the village of Garrison now is in the spring of 1872. His passing followed an illness of some months. Death was from hardening of the liver. Mr. Spelts was in his 75th year. The funeral services were held in the Methodist church on Sunday afternoon, May 21, at 2:30 o'clock. There was large attendance. The Ulysses Masonic lodge and the Ulysses G. A. R. post attended the funeral as organizations. The sermon was by Rev. George McClure, pastor of the Methodist church. The pall-bearers were from the Masonic lodge, all of them sons of veterans. They were A. B. Andrew, Lawrence Hillyer, S. E. Holt, Ed Northway, Ted and Sam Robey. At the cemetery the Masonic memorial service was given. In attendance at the funeral from elsewhere were Mr. Spelts' daughter and grandson, Mrs. Nettie Graves and little son, from Sioux City, Iowa, his daughter and granddaughter, Mrs. Lucy Wortendyke and little daughter, from Blue Springs, his daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Zerbe, from South Omaha, his brothers William Spelts from David City, Ben Spelts from Litchfield, Joseph Spelts from Grand Island and R. D. Spelts from Lincoln, Mr. and Mrs. Logan Spelts from David City, Cyrus Spelts from Omaha, George Spelts from Anselmo, Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Hardman from David City and Bryant Buffaloe from Bellwood. Mr. Spelts was born in Illinois September 1, 1841, and grew to manhood there. He enlisted as a solider for the Union on August 8, 1862, in Co. K, Twenty -sixth Illinois infantry, and served nearly three years, being mustered out June 27, 1865. He was in 13 battles, including Shiloh, Pittsburg Landing and Lookout Mountain. February 18, 1864, Mr. Spelts was married to Miss Octavia Hardman, in Illinois. Their married life included over 52 years. Mr. Spelts and family came to Nebraska in the spring of 1870, and for two years lived on a farm in Lancaster county which Mr. Spelts rented. Coming to Butler county in 1872, they lived four years on a homestead near where Garrison now is and then moved to a farm in Bone Creek township purchased by Mr. Spelts, where they resided 16 years. In 1888 Mr. Spelts sold this farm and he and his family moved to Milford, where they resided 10 years. In 1898 they moved to a farm near Ulysses and two years ago Mr. and Mrs. Spelts moved to town. Mr. Spelts for many years gave attention to cattle feeding as well as farming. For 21 years Mr. Spelts had been a member of the Congregational church and for 16 years he had held membership in Israel Lodge No. 187, A. F. and A. M., holding membership in the church and in the Masonic order up to time of his death. Thirteen children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Spelts. Seven of them survive their father. All were in attendance at the funeral except two, Mrs. Mary Gorman of Torrington, Wyo., and Perry F. Spelts of San Diego, Calif., who were unable to come. Two of Mr. Spelts' children, W. T. Spelts and George A. Spelts, Jr., reside in Ulysses. Mr. Spelts is survived also by his wife and by 28 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Spelts was born in Illinois September 1, 1841, and answered the final call of "Taps" at Ulysses, Neb., on Friday, May 19, at 7:15 a.m., at the ripe age of 74 years, 8 months and 18 days. The immediate cause of his death was hardening of the liver. He has suffered long and patiently and death came as a relief to the tired body. On February 18, 1864, Mr. Spelts was married to Miss Octavia Hardman at the place of his birth, and she proved a faithful companion in the vicissitudes incident to a voyage of little over fifty-two years, and is still living to mourn for him who was at all time a loving husband and father. To this union was born thirteen children, seven of whom survive to comfort the aged mother as follows: W. F. Spelts, of Ulysses; Mrs. Elizabeth Terbe, of South Omaha; Petty F. Spelts, of San Diego, Cal.; Mrs. Lucy Wortendyke, of Blue Springs; Mrs. Mary Gorman, of Torrington, Wyo.; George A. Spelts, jr., Ulysses; and Mrs. Nettie Graves, of Sioux City, Ia. Besides his wife and children he leaves to mourn his loss twenty-eight grandchildren and one great grandchild, also four brothers as follows: William Spelts, of David City, R. D. Spelts, of Lincoln; Joseph Spelts, of Grand Island; Ben Spelts, of Litchfield. On August 8, 1862, Mr. Spelts enlisted in Company K, Twenty-sixth Illinois infantry and served faithfully during the war, and was mustered out of service at Washington, D. C., on June 27, 1865. During his life as a soldier he participated in thirteen hard fought battles, including Shilo, Pittsburgh Landing and Lookout Mountain, and was also with Sherman on his famous march to the sea. In the spring of 1870 the family moved to Nebraska, took up his residence near Ulysses, living there until two years ago, when he retired from farm life and moved to the village.
