Ulysses, Aug. 24 – Mrs. Octavia Spelts, widow of George A. Spelts, was found dead in her home Saturday morning, Aug. 14. Death was from heart disease. She had been ill and her daughter, Mrs. Zerbe, of Omaha, had been here caring for her. Mrs. Zerbe returned home two days before, on Thursday, Aug. 12, her mother having seemingly become better. Mrs. James Stephens and Mrs. Amos Kilgore, close neighbors of Mrs. Spelts, went to the Spelts home at 7 o'clock Saturday morning and not receiving response to repeated raps and calls summoned assistance when entrance was gained through a window and Mrs. Spelts was found dead upon the floor of the living room. A wicker rocking chair in which she had sat had fallen upon her body. The body was warm when found. A physician was summoned at once, but nothing of avail could be done. Mrs. Spelts was in her 73d year. She was born December 15, 1847, in Green county, Indiana, and lived in Indiana until 10 years old when her parents moved to Logan county, Ill. She was married in Illinois February 14, 1864, to George A. Spelts. Thirteen children were born to them, seven of whom are living. Mr. Spelts died May 19, 1916. Mrs. Spelts had been a resident of Nebraska 50 years, much of which time she had lived in Butler county. Her husband and son, William, were owners and operators of the first grain elevator and the first lumber yard at Octavia. That town was named in honor of Mrs. Spelts. She had been a member of the Christian church for 40 years. Seven children, 28 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren survive Mrs. Spelts. The children are W. T. Spelts of Gregory, S. Dak., Mrs. M. J. Zerbe of Omaha, P. F. Spelts of San Diego, Calif., Mrs. J. O. Wortendyke of North Battlefield, Saskatchewan, Canada, Mrs. Richard Gorman of Lingle, Wyo., George A. Spelts, Jr. of Bancroft, Neb., and Mrs. Carl Graves of Sioux City, Iowa. All the children were present at the funeral except P. F. Spelts, living in California, and Mrs. Wortendyke, living in Canada. Mrs. Spelts is surviving also by one brother, S. J. Hardman, of David City, and two sisters, Mrs. W. L. Green of Grand Island and Mrs. Mary Davenport of Mountain View, Okla. Funeral services for Mrs. Spelts were held Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 17, in the Christian church and were conducted by the pastor of that church, Rev. Hewitson. Sons and grandsons of Mrs. Spelts were the pallbearers.
