Mr. Brannen died Sunday afternoon in a David City hospital. He was born in Waddington, N.Y., on Sept. 13, 1875, the son of Lawrence and Bridget Monahan Brannen. When five years old he came with the family to Nebraska settling at Hastings for a few years and later at Palmer. Still later, the family moved to Greeley County, where he attended and was graduated from Greeley Public Schools in 1897, a member of the first high school graduating class. He attended Creighton University in Omaha. On Sept. 6, 1910, he was married to Mary Ann Doyle at Sacred Heart Church in Greeley and they made their home at Brayton where he worked 16 years at the Brayton State Bank. After the bank closed, he managed the lumber yard there for 14 years. In 1934, the family moved to Greeley, where he worked as treasurer of the corn and hog program, an organization to help farmers during the depression. Shortly after, he was elected Greeley County treasurer, a position he held for 20 years until his retirement in 1954. He served on the Brayton and Greeley School Boards for a combined 40 years. Mrs. Brannen died June 21, 1968, and he went to David City to live with his son, Mr. and Mrs. Clair Brannen. Survivors include five sons, Joseph of Greeley, George Jr. of Lincoln, Clair of David City, Robert of Rohnet Park, Calif., and Raymond of Portland; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Gilbert of Evergreen, Ill.; one brother, Lewis of Greeley; 31 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, one son, three brothers and three sisters.
