WAS LONG PROMINENT Pioneer Allen County Citizen Expired Friday Night at His Home Near Aboit. Hon. George B. Lawrence, a pioneer resident of Lafayette township, and a former representative from Allen county in the state legislature, died at 10:50 o'clock Friday night at his home near Aboit, after an extended illness. Death was due to Bright's disease, from which the patient had long been a sufferer, and his condition was rendered additionally grave a few weeks ago when the patient sustained an attack of paralysis. It had been realized for some time that his recovery was impossible and friends could only minister as best they might through the illness which marked the closing weeks of Mr. Lawrence's long and useful life. The deceased was 71 years of age and was one of the widely known and highly respected citizens of the county, who had been prominent in its affairs for many years. He was a native of Ohio, born May 1, 1835, upon his father's farm in Wayne county. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Lawrence, who were Pennsylvanians by birth, and the young man was reared to the sturdy life of the farmer. Mr. Lawrence came to Indiana in 1863, settling upon the farm in Lafayette township, near Aboit, where the remainder of his life was spent. Here, during the earlier years, he shared fully the toil and hardships incident to the clearing and development of his farm and the establishing for his family of a most comfortable and pleasant country home. Mr. Lawrence was a man of marked character and lofty integrity, a representative of the sturdy, honest, industrious, and thoroughly useful citizenship which develops the best in life. He possessed a wide acquaintance and was held in universal esteem. Politically, he was a democrat and he was twice honored by the people of this county by election as a representative to the state legislature in 1898 and 1902 and in public office he served with marked fidelity and credit. For fourteen years, also, he held the position of actuary of the Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance association of Allen county. Early in life, he affiliated with the Lutheran church and on removing to Indiana he united with the Monson Chapel Methodist Episcopal church in Lafayette township, of which he remained a member until his death. During the last two years of illness, Mr. Lawrence derived infinite comfort and solace from his religious experience. Mr. Lawrence was united in marriage in Ohio, November 23, 1854 to Miss Elizabeth Geitgey, and to this union were born five children-three sons and two daughters. Of these, one son and the daughters preceded the father in death. The two remaining sons, John and Grover Lawrence, reside upon the old homestead. The loving wife and seven grandchildren also survive to mourn his loss. Of his family there remain four brothers and one sister- John J. and David Lawrence, of Lafayette township; Milo Lawrence of Whitley county; Mrs. Melissa Rice, of Pleasant township, and Amos Lawrence, of Fort Wayne. Funeral services Monday morning at 10 o'clock from the residence and later from the Monson Chapel Methodist Episcopal church; interment at Glenwood cemetery, Roanoke. Friends are asked to omit flowers.
