MERRILL PARALYSIS VICTIM One Of Old Heads Of Community Died Last Saturday Morning Funeral Was Held Tuesday Afternoon Mr. George B. Merrill, one of the community's oldest and most highly respected citizens, died at his home in the Asbury section, on Johnson's Creek road, as a result of a paralytic stroke, Saturday morning. Mr. Merrill was out in the yard of his home when the attack developed, and his moans of distress were heard by his daughter, Mrs. Howard, who lived with him. Investigation disclosed him lying on the ground in an unconscious condition. With the help of neighbors, he was carried into the house, a physician summoned, but he died within a short while, without regaining consciousness. He was the son of the late Henry and Henrietta Merrill, and on August 10th was 82 years of age. He was best known to the community as Mr. "Mack" Merrill, and his friends and acquaintances were many. During his long life he had been one of the kind of men who were helpful to others, who made friends easily, and with whom it was a pleasure to converse. In his younger days Mr. Merrill was a waterman, gaining his livelihood by catching oysters, fish and crabs. He was an energetic man and worked hard and steadily on the waters of the sounds and rivers in this section winter and summer. For about ten years he was sexton of Asbury Church, and held that position creditably and satisfactorily until the ravages of disease and his advanced age caused him to relinquish it. A member of Asbury Methodist Church, he was faithful in his attendance there and was regarded as one of the "pillars" of that fountainhead of Methodism. Seldom indeed did he miss a meeting when his health permitted him to attend. It can be said of him that his greatest interest in life was in rearing his family in an atmosphere of contentment and religious teaching, and that his second greatest interest was in his church, and its growth and well-being was near and dear to his heart. He was one of the oldest Masons in the community, a member of Chesapeake Lodge No. 147, A.E. & A.M., which held Masonic ceremonies at the grave after funeral services had been held in Asbury Church Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, with Rev. J.T. Rowlenson, his pastor, officiating. Interment was in the family burial plot in Asbury cemetery. Many relatives and friends attended the funeral ceremonies and many beautiful floral pieces placed about the casket attested the esteem in which the deceased generally was held. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Grace Howard, and four sons, Warren H. Merrill, of Wilmington, Del., Elijah Merrill, of East St. Louis, Ill., George M.
