Description	:	Farmer George was born to Gay Elmer and Emma (Shenton) Nichols. He graduated from high school in Murray, IA, and entered the US Navy from 1920-1922. He graduated from Des Moines (Capital City) Commercial College Nov. 11, 1923, having taken bookkeeping and lumber yard management. George began working for the Peavey Lumber Co., being transferred to three or four places in eastern South Dakota and Southern Minnesota, including Brookings, SD, in 1924. Read More	Farmer George was born to Gay Elmer and Emma (Shenton) Nichols. He graduated from high school in Murray, IA, and entered the US Navy from 1920-1922. He graduated from Des Moines (Capital City) Commercial College Nov. 11, 1923, having taken bookkeeping and lumber yard management. George began working for the Peavey Lumber Co., being transferred to three or four places in eastern South Dakota and Southern Minnesota, including Brookings, SD, in 1924. There he met Esther Marie Anderson. They had a long engagement because of her poor health. George moved to rural northern Wisconsin, near Glen Flora, in 1929 to farm. He returned to marry Esther in the home of her sister, Anne Prunty, in Forestburg, SD. The family lived in three homes on Range Line Road near Glen Flora. George was an adult Sunday School teacher at the Baptist Church in Glen Flora. His children, Phyllis and Richard were both born in Wisconsin. In 1945 the family moved to a farm near White, SD. In March, 1946, the family bought a half-section farm 13 miles east of Brookings and lived there until the fall of 1957, when they moved to the farm one mile west of Brookings. George had been a dairy farmer, but gradually went into beef cattle and grain farming. He was on the Board of Trustees at the Brookings Church of God and a member of the State Camp Meeting Board. As his son Dick became more and more involved in farming and George's health declined, George began working at the Horticulture Department at South Dakota State University in the spring of 1958. He worked full time at first and later part time because of his Arteriosclerotic Heart Disease, His last employment, from 1959 to 1960, was as a night watchman at the university. George loved his family and worked very hard as a farmer. He was a quiet man. He loved having all of his grandchildren near him the last two years of his life and often helped care for them during those two years.
