Read More	Homemaker, bookkeeper, receptionist Esther spent her childhood in Arlington, SD, after the family moved from the farm near Lake Poinsett. She became a Christian there and was baptized in Lake Poinsett. She moved to Brookings, SD, where she graduated from high school. She was employed as a secretary at South Dakota State College in the Extension Department. Esther worked with her sister, Anne, to start a Sunday School which later became the Church of God in Brookings. She met George Nichols when he began attending the Sunday School. At age 20, Esther began to suffer from ulcer attacks and became very weak and ill. Her engagement to George was a long one because of her health. She lived with her sister, Anne Prunty in Forestburg for the year before they were married. After her marriage, Esther was still too weak to sweep a floor, but her health gradually improved. Both of their children were born in Wisconsin. The Nichols were active in the Baptist Church in Glen Flora with Esther serving as president of the women's group and as superintendent of the Sunday School. In 1945 the family moved to White, SD, and a year later moved to a farm east of Brookings. Esther was active at First Church of God in Brookings, serving as teacher of the high school Sunday School class. She entertained college students who came to church, doing much to make them feel at home. Esther was interested in the Women's organization, becoming state president. She traveled to Anderson, IN, for the International Camp Meeting to attend National Women's meetings. She was also chairman of the Mission Board at the local church. Esther was a director of the South Dakota Mental Health Association and belonged to the Brookings area Association of Mental Health. In 1977 she received the President's Volunteer of the Year award from the state association. She was also active in a home extension club, W.C.T.U., and Brookings Hospital Auxiliary. She worked as Bookkeeper and receptionist for Dr. Watson, the Brookings Hospital, and Dr. Kershner. After her husband died, she had a house built for herself in Brookings.
