Description	:	County Commissioner GEORGE C. HUFFER died at his home, Middletown, shortly after three o'clock yesterday afternoon, after a long illness, 68 years old. He was a son of the late John Huffer and was born on the Huffer homestead three miles south of Middletown in 1948. In 1903 he sold his farm and removed to Middletown where he has since resided. Later... Read More	County Commissioner GEORGE C. HUFFER died at his home, Middletown, shortly after three o'clock yesterday afternoon, after a long illness, 68 years old. He was a son of the late John Huffer and was born on the Huffer homestead three miles south of Middletown in 1948. In 1903 he sold his farm and removed to Middletown where he has since resided. He suffered from an internal ailment that affected his health for a long time. Some months ago he underwent an operation in a Baltimore hospital and after returning home was ill for some weeks. Later he apprently improved and for awhile was able to attend the sessions of the County Commissioners at the Court House. Last Monday, however, his old ailment reappeared and he became worse until the end. For the past two days he was unconscious most of the time and was able to recognize members of his household only at intervals. He was one of the best known farmers of Middletown Valley and because of his kindly disposition and generous manner he was known as "Uncle" George. It is said he never turned anyone from his door hungry or otherwise in need, without an effort to make them comfortable. Last fall a year ago he was elected a member of the Board of County Commissioners and during his short time in office he made a record as a careful guardian of the county's interest. Mr. Huffer inherited his thrift from his father, Joseph L. Huffer, who came to Middletown Valley after his marriage to Catherine Mullendore, a poor young man. By frugality and work he became prosperous and was able to establish each of his eight children in business on their own farms. In 1853 Mr. Huffer married Mary M. DeLauter, daughter of the late Samuel DeLauter, a pioneer farmer of Middletown Valley. There was no children by the marriage. The funeral took place at the house; burial was made in Middletown.
