Came to Territory in 1881 and Joined Two Brothers in One of Largest Ranches Death claimed another of Montana's early sheepmen recently when George Calvin Bower died at his home in Great Falls. He had been ill for two months. Mr. Bower was a native of Pleasant Valley, Duchess county, New York, son of John and Amanda Bower and one of a family of seven children, all of whom reside in New York State. Educated in the public schools of his native state, he graduated from Boston University in 1872. For nine years he taught dramatic art and in 1881 he came to Montana to join two brothers in the sheep business. The brothers, A. W. and J. E. Bower, established the Bower Brothers ranch on Surprise creek near Stanford in 1880. On Jan. 7, 1886, George Bower married Alice Alden at Cairo, Greene county, N. Y. She was the daughter of Charles and Elsie Alden of that village. Mrs. Bower died at the family home in Great Falls July 3, 1931. On his first trip to Montana George Bower came up the Missouri river by boat. On his return from the east with his bride the couple traveled by train to Billings and from Billings to the ranch by mule team. The ranch established by the Bower brothers was situated in the western part of what is now Judith Basin county, east of Wolf Butte and south of the Highwood mountains in what was then Meagher county, Montana territory. Using the boats on the Missouri river, the trip from the home of the Bowers in the east required 35 days. The Bower ranch was one of the largest in Montana. The started their sheep venture with 1,000 animals brought from Deer Lodge in 1880. The firm continued in business for 27 years. The holdings were sold in 1907 to the J. B. Long company. The Bower home was established in Great Falls in 1901. After living at the ranch for seven years, Mrs. Bower was called east by the illness and death of her father and she remained there until coming to Great Falls. After the sale of the ranch, A. W. Bower went east to live and J. E. Bower moved to Helena where he was a director in the Union Bank and Trust company. Mr. Bower is survived by three children, Mrs. A. M. Embrey and Miss Hazel Bower of Great Falls, and a son, John A. Bower, of Square Butte. From: cara
