Bower, Pioneer of Montana, Passes in Eastern Hospital The death of J. E. Bower, well known stockman and banker of Helena, took place at midnight on Wednesday night at Johns Hopkins hospital at Baltimore, where recently he underwent a serious operation. Information of his unexpected death was contained in a telegram received here yesterday morning from Mrs. Bower, who was with her husband at the time of his death. Arrangements for the funeral are in abeyance until information is received here from Mrs. Bower, as to the time of her arrival from Baltimore. It is expected that the burial will be in the family lot in Forestvale. Mr. Bower is survived by his widow and two children, Edward and Marie of Helena, and by his brothers, G. Calvin Bower of Great Falls; Charles Bower of Duchess county, N. Y., and F. I. Bower of Arlington, N. Y. He was a Mason, a member of the Scottish Rite bodies of Helena and Algeria temple of the Mystic Shrine. The family home was at 702 Harrison avenue. Operation in June Mr. and Mrs. Bower left Helena (Continued on Pago Two) for Baltimore on May 23, in order that Mr. Bower might have the attention of specialists at Johns Hopkins. An operation was performed June 8, and for some time thereafter Mr. Bower's condition improved, and it was thought up to a few days ago that he would be restored to health, and be able to return to Helena. Joseph Edward Bower was born in Pleasant Valley, New York on February 26, 1849. His boyhood days were spent in Dutchess county, that state. As a young man he conducted a general store at Stanford, near Poughkeepsie. Came to Montana in 1880. In the spring of 1880, Mr. Bower at the age of 31 years, came to Montana, coming up the Missouri river to Fort Benton. Shortly thereafter, he, with two brothers, A W. and G. Calvin, entered the sheep business in Judith Basin, starting at that time the firm of Bower Brothers, with headquarters near the present town of Stanford. This firm became one of the largest livestock outfits in the state, and when they sold out to the Long Investment company, about 1907, the firm delivered to the purchasers with their ranch of approximately 50,000 acres, more than 35,000 head of sheep. Mr. Bower and his brother, Frederick I. were also the owners of the Basin Livestock company. This company, with its sheep and equipment, was sold to Louis Penwell and associates in 1907. Mr. Bower, as well as his brothers who were associated with him, all retiring from business at that time. On Oct 15, 1902, Mr. Bower was married in Fort Benton to Miss Lenora Patterson of Baltimore and they established a residence in Helena in 1903, residing here since. Prominent in Business While practically retired since 1907, Mr. Bower has been connected with several business enterprises, being president of the W. C. Gillette company, one of the large livestock companies of this county, and a director for many years of the Union Bank and Trust company of Helena. Besides being prominently identified with large business interests of Montana for more than 40 years. Mr. Bower has always been actively identified with civic and benevolent work. It was largely thru his activity that the present Y. M. C. A. building was constructed. Edward and Linnie had two children, Joseph Edward Jr., and Leonora. Leonora died at age 3. After her death, they adopted a daughter, Marie.
