Walnut St., died in St. Joseph Memorial Hospital Monday afternoon, December 1, 1980. Born September 30, 1894 in Knox County, Nebraska, he was a son of John B. and Anna (Hrbek) Uhlir, who were distinguished early settlers of the newly opened territory. His mother's parents were among the first three families to seek a home in Nebraska. He was married November 28, 1928, to Gladys Eleanor Young of Minneapolis, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Golby Cleigh Uhlir, an attorney in Sioux City, Iowa; a daughter, Dr. Ann Uhlir, executive director of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women in Washington; three sisters, Eleanor Bradbrook of Chicago, and Helen Beasley and Marcella Surowic, both of Santa Ana, Calif.; two brothers, Fred J. Uhlir, owner of Oak View Ranch near O'Neill, Neb., and Otto W. Uhlir, a rancher near Verdigre, Neb.; and two grandchildren. A daughter, three brothers and five sisters preceded him in death. Uhlir attended a rural grade school near his home, then Fremont Normal College. He taught briefly in a business college in Fort Madison, Iowa, and attended and graduated with an LLB degree in 1917 from Valparaiso University. The school honored hi with a JD degree in 1970. During World War I, he enlisted in Troop 1 of the 13th Provisional Training Regiment and attended officers training camp at Fort Snelling, Minn. After finishing a course in law in 1919 at the University of Nebraska, Uhlir passed the American Bar Association examination and was admitted to practice July 30, 1919. His practice began in Chamberlain, S. D., and later was moved to Kimball, S. D. He moved to Kokomo in April 1928 and became a partner in the law firm of Miller and Uhlir. After his partner left Kokomo for Washington, Uhlir practiced alone and maintained his office through 1979. He was listed in "Who's Who in the Midwest" and served Kokomo in several capacities. He was appointed to the cemetery board four times by former Mayor Harold Freeland. During his 14 years on the board, Uhlir incorporated the board, creating the Board of Cemetery Regents. During those years, the cemetery board was self-supporting and required no financial assistance from city funds. In 1940, Indiana Gov. Clifford Townsend appointed Uhlir a government agent to hear and do followup work on appeals made by men drafted into military service. He was honored with a citation by President Lyndon B. Johnson after 25 years in that position. He was a member of the Brule Commandery Knights Templar 19 of the Chamberlain Masonic Lodge and was a post commander of the American Legion in Kimball and service officer for 7 years in Chamberlain and Kokomo. He also was a member of First Congregational Church, where he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher for many years, and was a member of the board of the Indiana Conference of Congregational Churches. Uhlir's professional memberships included the American, Indiana and Howard County Bar Association and American Judicature Society. He served as president of the county association in 1941.
