GLADYS UHLIR Gladys Y. Uhlir, 91, 715 E. Walnut St., died at 5:49 p.m., Tuesday, April 12, 1988, in Saint Joseph Hospital and Health Center. She was born August 28, 1896 in Harvey, North Dakota, a daughter of the Rev. Arthur G. and Anna (Totten) Young. November 28, 1928, she married George C. Uhlir, who died December 1, 1980. Uhlir was valedictorian of Mapleton (Minn.) High School in 1914. She had taught school in Minnesota, South Dakota and for 20 years at Jefferson School. She retired in 1963. She also was assistant professor of education at Indiana State College.,,,,,,,,, She attended numerous schools in Minnesota and South Dakota and received degrees from Northern Normal and Industrial School, the University of Minnesota, Chicago University and Columbia University Teachers College. Ulhir played the organ at several churches and sang in several choirs. She was a published poet and received an honorary life membership in Kokomo Morning Musicale in 1985. She was a charter member of White Shrine, in which she served as worthy herald. She was past president of American Legion Auxiliary. She was a member of Indiana State Teachers Association, National Retired, Howard County and Indiana Retired Teachers Associations. She also was a member of First Congregation Christian Church UCC, served as president of Priscilla Circle and was active in other church work. Surviving are a son, Golby Cleigh Uhlir of Sioux City, Iowa; a daughter, Dr. Ann Uhlir of Denton, Texas; and two grandchildren. A daughter, a grandson and two sisters preceded her in death. Arrangements are pending at Fenn Funeral Home.
