Moad was born in Ray County, Missouri April 4, 1845 and died at his home near New Holland, S. D. January 7, 1924 at the age of 78 years, 9 months and 3 days. He was the youngest son of Daniel Moad and Elizabeth Stanley Moad. There being eight children, three daughters and five sons. All have gone on before except, Mrs. Jesse Kisling, of Long Beach Cal., the sister just older than him. His parents moved from Missouri to Decatur County, Iowa, when he was but one year old. Here they resided until the spring of 1867, when again they moved to the frontier -- Monona County, Iowa. December 4, 1870 he was united in marriage to Miss Eliza J. Baggs, of Belvidere, Iowa. To this union were born four children, Arthur G., Altha A., Ethel R., and Earnestenia E. All of whom resided with him at the time of his death. His wife passed away near Mapleton, Iowa, July 24, 1887. He resided in Monona County, Iowa until the spring of 1898 when he went to Douglas County, S. D. and located on the farm which has ever since been his home. His people were Scotch, coming to America before the Revolutionary war, and always have been pioneers taking active interest in all governmental affairs and believing it a sacred duty to aid the government in every possible way. His death came very suddenly and very peacefully. He was always well. Monday morning when the oldest daughter waked him, he told her that he had been a bit restless during the night, but that it had not awakened him, just a slightly crowded feeling. This feeling grew no worse and part of the time he did not feel it. He ate his breakfast and spent the forenoon as he usually did. Just before noon while the youngest daughter was talking to him he passed away as he sat in his chair. The funeral was held at the home Wednesday afternoon. As he was always a Methodist the services were conducted by Rev. Alley of the M. E. church at Platte, S. D. The text being “I have fought a good, fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” The body was taken to Mapleton, Iowa, for burial beside his wife. The services there were held in the M. E. church, by the pastor Rev. Dunn, the text being “Let not your heart be troubled, ye believe in God believe also in me.”
