Read More	George Scottt ATHENS — George Dwight Scott, 94, formerly of Athens, passed away peacefully at his home at Wesley Glen Retirement Community in Columbus on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010. He was surrounded by his loving family. "Scotty," as he was affectionately known, was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife of 67 years, Helen Rose Scott, in 2006. Dwight attended school in Columbus and participated in sports, was a delivery boy for The Columbus Dispatch for four years and was a violinist in his school's Chamber Orchestra. Music remained a source of joy to him for his entire life. During his high school years, his family moved to New Marshfield, where he graduated from Waterloo High School. Dwight lived in Athens County most of his life, where he worked for many years as a foreman for Knowlton Con-struction Co. during the building of Ohio University's East Green. In 1979, he retired from the Ohio Department of Transportation. During their retirement, he and his wife, Helen, enjoyed many years of travel throughout Europe and North America. In the mid-1990s, Scotty and Helen moved to Lancaster, then to Columbus in 2004 to be closer to their children, but Scotty always longed to return to his beloved Athens County. He was a 73-year member and past master of Constitution Lodge 426 F&AM, a 32nd-degree Mason, a past worthy patron of the New Marshfield Chapter OES 346, and member of the Aladdin Temple Shrine, Athens County Shrine Club, VFW Post 9893 and K.T. Crossen Post 21 American Legion. Dwight was a true patriot and proud American. Even when he could no longer, he always tried to stand during the passing of the American flag, the singing of the National Anthem or the Pledge of Allegiance. A veteran of World War II, he proudly served with the 749th U.S. Army Railway Operating Battalion and was stationed in the Philippines. He was 28 years old when he enlisted in the Army and, during his years of service, made life-long friends with his Army "brothers." The 749th began holding annual reunions in major cities throughout the U.S. in 1948. He and Helen delighted in seeing his "buddies" each year and the 749th members and their families became extended family of the Scotts. Dwight and long-time friend and 749th member Don Gothard hosted the final World War II Railway Veterans Club reunion in Columbus last July. Always a "man's man," Scotty enjoyed a good round of golf, a smoke and a "toddy" or two … usually two. He was the son of the late John Lester and Josephine Luticia Linton Scott of Albany. Also preceding him in death were his only sibling, his brother, Jack; brothers-in-law Karl, Ray, Marion and Harry Rose; and sisters-in-law Susan Rose (Dick), Dolores Rose (Ray), Pauline Pond (Howard), Hester Rose (Marion) and Mary Rose (Thomas). Dwight is survived by his four children, Gene Scott (Linda) of Pickerington, Julia Scott Hyrne (Hal) of Upper Arlington, Jane Scott Krueger (Doug) of Heath and Jo Scott Roney (Mike) of Worthington; five grandchildren, Greg Scott (Chris) of Reynoldsburg, Leslie Scott Denlinger (Adam) of Saline, Mich., Kelly Krueger Dye (Ryan) of Lakeville, Kristin Krueger of Heath and Scott Krueger of Heath; four great-grandchildren, Avery and Megan Scott (Greg) and Lauren and Drew Denlinger (Leslie); brothers-in-law Tommy Rose of Athens, Dick Rose of Buckeye Lake and Howard "Rowdy" Pond of Pickerington; sisters-in- law Margaret Scott (Jack) of Bel Air, Md., Wanda Rose (Karl) of Athens and Ruth Rose (Harry) of Athens; and nearly 20 wonderful nieces and nephews. He was an adored Daddy, "Pop" and Great-Grandpop. The family warmly extends its sincerest gratitude and thanks to Scotty's "girls" — Danette, Lisa, and Vera — whose unconditional devotion and care added a true richness to his recent life. These three loving ladies join a long list of his many, many dear friends. Special gratitude and thanks also are extended to Wesley Glen nurses Shirley, Tagan and Monica and to the many wonderful Wesley Glen caregivers for their attentiveness, kindness and care during his nearly six-year residency. Friends may call on Monday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Jagers and Sons Funeral Home, 24 Morris Ave., Athens. A funeral service conducted by Minister Willard Love will immediately follow the calling hours, at 1. Interment will be in Can-aanville Cemetery, with graveside military rites conducted by K.T. Crossen Post 21 American Legion, VFW Posts 3477 and 9893. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Ohio Library for the Blind, 17121 Lake Shore Blvd., Cleveland, OH 44110-4006.
