Description	:	Last Wednesday morning, September 20, 1911, George Van Auken of Coffins Grove township, a son of Mr. and Mrs. M. S. Van Auken of this city, died suddenly at Rochester, Minnesota. Ten days previous to his death he became suddenly ill while at work in his barn and was scarcely able to reach the house without assistance. His malady was... Read More	Last Wednesday morning, September 20, 1911, George Van Auken of Coffins Grove township, a son of Mr. and Mrs. M. S. Van Auken of this city, died suddenly at Rochester, Minnesota. Ten days previous to his death he became suddenly ill while at work in his barn and was scarcely able to reach the house without assistance. Before a doctor could be summoned he recovered somewhat and insisted upon coming to Manchester, but on the way here he grew worse again and was suffering intensely when he reached the office of the family physician in this city. His malady was readily diagnosed as a severe attack of appendicitis, and he was hurriedly taken to Rochester and operated upon at St. Mary's hospital in that city the following day. He was accompanied to Rochester by his mother, who remained at his bedside for a week and until it was believed that he had fully recovered from the operation. After his mother's return home he continued to improve and wrote his father giving directions about the management of his farm business. He had so far ???? that he had been given his discharge from the hospital, and was preparing to leave when he fell to the floor and expired in about 20 minutes. A post mortem examination disclosed a clot of blood in one of his lungs, which it is believed was the immediate cause of death. He was married to Miss Eva Grapes on February 18, 1903, and is survived by her and their two children, Bernice aged six years, and Floyd aged 7 months. He had sole charge of the Van Auken farm after the remov- three years ago and was an up to-date progressive farmer. He was intelligent, industrious and respected by a large circle of friends. The grief stricken parents and wife have the heartfelt sympathy of an entire community. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at the family home in Coffins Grove, and notwithstanding the threatening condition of the weather, was very largely attended. Mr. Van Auken was a member of Olive camp Modern Woodmen of America, and the order attended in a body and the ceremony of Woodcraft was observed at the funeral. Rev. W. H. Ensign, pastor of the Presbyterian church of this city, preached the funeral sermon. The interment was in the cemetery at Masonville. Manchester Democrat, Manchester, Iowa, September 27, 1911
