S. Van Auken, pioneer settler of Coffin's Grove township, this county, died at his home on South Tama street early this (Tuesday) morning, March 22, 1932, in the 82nd year of his age. Funeral services are to be held from his late residence on Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, the Rev. J. P. Moore officiating, and burial will be made in the family lot, in Masonville cemetery. Mr. Van Auken was born in the state of New York June 3, 1850, and very early in life came to this county. For forty years or more he was engaged in farming in Coffin's Grove township, retiring and coming to Manchester in 1908. On Nov. 6, 1872, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Van Alstyne, also of Coffin's Grove, and for more than fifty six years they loved happily together. Her death occurred on March 6, 1920. Two children were born to this union George, who died on Sept 20th, 1911, and Margaret, who passed away at the age of eight years. Surviving the pioneer are his daughter-ion-law, Mrs. George Van Auken, who has given him such affectionate and faithful care since the death of his wife; two grandchildren, Floyd Van Auken of this city and Mrs. Garnet Hon of Aurora, Iowa, two nieces, Miss Maggie Van Auken of Central City and Mrs. Perry Mo??? formerly Mrs. E. S. Wetherbee of Cedar Rapids. His long residence in Delaware county had given Mr. Van Auken a wide acquaintance among its people, and they will learn of his death with regret. He was a man of exemplary life, of kindly nature and of strict probability , and he was highly thought of by many friends here and in the farming community which was for so many years his home.
