Apparently these were two men cut from the same cloth. He was born in Michigan to John M. Scobell and Mary Elizabeth Tool 25 July 1860. The family settled in Speaker, Sanilac, Michigan just before the Civil War, and his father left in 1862 to join the Union forces. They never saw him again. George was only about 2 years old. His mother was widowed in 1865 at age 23 with 3 children, ages 3 and younger. She remarried soon after being notified of his death to a man her family had known for many years, but I fretted over whether the second marriage was a happy one because they were so difficult to find in the census returns. It literally took years and a lot of help from cousins before I learned anything about my great great grandmother's fate. My great grandfather George Edward Scobell seems by all accounts to have been a great guy. He was state representive for Hutchinson County, SD in 1902 and 1903, serving on the Temperance Committee and Agriculture and Horticulture Committee. Apparently he wanted to contribute to his community and was respected enough to be elected. Of all his descendants, I look at his picture and see my mother the most in him. He was primarily a farmer, but he did run a steam laundry for some years shortly after his first marriage. It was located in LeMars, Iowa. He had 2 children with his first wife, Bertha Agnes Sallach, but the marriage didn't work out or they were trying to save each other from contracting the TB because they parted ways. I have not found a divorce. They were married from about 1884 to 1893. Bertha died in 1893 of tuberculosis. I don't know who gave it to who, but fortunately the children were saved from that kind of death. In 1896 my great grandpa remarried to Margaret Elizabeth McLin and they had three children. By at least 1908 he discovered he had TB and went to Colorado to try to get well. He only lasted about 9 months, finally dying of the disease 14 October 1909 in Vineland, Pueblo, Colorado. I discovered these things 30 years after my grandfather, John M. Scobell, died. When I'd ask him questions about his parents, he didn't seem to want to talk about them. I didn't understand why until I did my genealogy research. Now I figure he just didn't know much at all about his father or grandfather. So these things I've gleaned and I continue to look for more information on my ancestors. It's been an interesting journey. Love you great grandpa...it was so nice to visit your grave.
