Description	:	John McLinn Scobell was my grandfather and, unlike my grandmother, I did get the opportunity to visit with him for a few years before his death because he came to live with us. John Scobell was the son of George Edward Scobell (1860-1909) and Margaret Elizabeth McLinn (1875-1938). He married Anna Louise Tuffs 8 May 1926 in Tyndall, Bon Homme, South Dakota. John Scobell was the son of George Edward Scobell (1860-1909) and Margaret Elizabeth McLinn (1875-1938). He married Anna Louise Tuffs 8 May 1926 in Tyndall, Bon Homme, South Dakota. They had two children. Grandpa served in WWI, enlisting at Sioux City, Woodbury, Iowa, WWI: Sergeant Battery F 37th Artillery; no battles. Actually the men in the family on both sides, Scobell and Tuffs, have always enlisted. I have some of those long pictures of his unit. When grandpa lived with us, I asked him a few times about his parents and grandparents, and he always side-tracked me to another subject or told a joke. I came to the conclusion that he didn't want to talk about the past, and I was afraid thinking about it brought to mind those who had passed away and it was painful, so I desisted. He did say once that his grandparents traveled by covered wagon to South Dakota, but he wasn't specific as to which ones. 40 years later, after putting together a family tree, I realized he just knew very little and so he couldn't say much about them. His father died of tuberculosis when he was 11 and he'd probably been sick for a number of years. His mother, though I don't know anything about her really, appears in her pictures to not be a sentimental person dwelling on the past (unlike me). Grandpa also seemed to live in the here and now and did not appear at all sentimental. My step-father and mother pointed out to me the changes in the world and technology since he was born in 1897 to what was then the mid 1970's. Space ships to the moon, telephones, color TV's, flying airplanes, autos instead of horses, computers, cell phones, etc. Grandpa took it all in his stride and never seemed overwhelmed. He was probably better adjusted than I am now. I have pictures of grandma and grandpa on their wedding day. Grandma looked pissed off and grandpa looked like a swaggering, conceited chauvinist. His brothers and brothers-in-law were around and it looked like the men kind of did their thing and the women were looking on somewhat disgusted. Perhaps a little booze came into play there. There is no one alive around today to tell me what was going on that day. I must say I think grandpa and his brothers were some of the most handsome men I've ever seen (even if only in pictures), but they did come across in those pictures like they knew it. That's why I put that comment about his ego on the picture I posted of him. To the day he died, my grandpa always had a swashbuckling, confident air, and he had a girl friend he'd see nearly every day. He was strong and active until an artery in his chest ruptured when he was mowing the lawn in 112 degree heat. This led to his death a few days later. I used to have to go out and tell him to get out of his dark green car in the summer time. He'd sit out there in it with the windows closed with no air. It must have been 150 degrees or so inside. Grandpa used to irritate me on purpose. He'd call me a sweater girl and ask me about my boyfriends. I mean he'd get personal with the questions...geez. I almost can understand why my mom ran off with a city boy if she had to go through that. They were dead set against my dad (for good reason), so when the marriage failed she didn't ask for help from them or try to go back home. They never knew the horror of her life with him, thank God. Grandpa and I read a lot, so we shared books. Mostly westerns since that was his favorite. Dinner talk was about our experiences of the day or my hair, clothes and makeup (grandpa picking on me). The only rule my mom had was that he wear a shirt at the dinner table--not just his undershirt. He dressed pretty snazzy all the time and taught me to polish his shoes so I kept a shine on them. Grandpa drove all around town exploring since he was unfamiliar with Phoenix and there was a lot to do. He enjoyed his time in Phoenix and enjoyed the hot weather. Grandpa was a farmer all his life, but he and his mother at one time owned a WNAX gas station in Gettysburg, SD. I don't know how long they owned it, but perhaps it was too hard keeping it and the farm going because eventually it was sold. Apparently he was a good farmer because my mother mentioned they had food during the depression and didn't suffer too much from the rationing. When grandpa came to live with us he brought two tea boxes which were given by the oil companies to their station owners. These two boxes contained the family pictures. One of my favorite things to do was to go through the boxes. Most weren't identified, but later contact with Tuffs and McLinn family members helped me to identify many of the subjects. From my grandmother's diary, I learned that grandpa enjoyed playing cards with friends, and sometimes he would bet money and lose my grandmother's pin money. They were a pretty sociable couple and often had company over or went to visit other people. They went to the movies a lot since his brother Lloyd owned a movie theater in Wagner. He liked horses and rode well. One of the men I met in Scotland said he used to help the veterinarian a lot because he was strong and good with animals. So that's what I remember about my grandfather, John M. Scobell. In spite of the difference in our personalities, I loved him. He was not mean--he just liked to jerk chains. He was pretty sharp and didn't like to sit around. Generally speaking, he didn't interfere with your life and expected the same from you. Love you grandpa! Deborah (Eagan) Lindsley
