Funeral Sunday and Largely Attended by Lodges and Citizens From all Parts of the County. The citizens of Creighton were shocked last Friday morning to learn, that George E. Cheney had met his death by falling into an elevator shaft in the Drexel hotel at Omaha, on the evening of Sept. 15th at about eight o'clock. The following is an account of how it happened which we take from the Herald: He arrived in the city yesterday morning with his wife and daughter, 17 years of age. After supper he took his key and ordered a bell boy to bring a pitcher of ice water to his room. He was near the elevator at the time and his wife was with him. While he was waiting for the bell the elevator was called to the third floor. Mr. Cheney did not observe it's assent and when he turned to forward step and fell a distance of eight feet into the basement. When picked up he was unconscious and bleeding at the ears. Mrs. Cheney immediately sent for Dr. William H. Christie. The physician found that the skull had been fractured at the base of the brain, that the collar bone had been broken and that one rib just over the heart had been fractured. His efforts to revive the injured man proved unavailing and Mr. Cheney died within an hour and forty minutes after his fall. Coroner Swanson impaneled a jury which view the remains during the evening. An inquest will be held this morning. The body was taken to the undertaking establishment of H. K. Burket, at Capitol avenue and Sixtieenth street. It will be shipped to Creighton this morning. -------------------------------------------- George E. Cheney was born in Worchester county, Mass., in 1838, was married to Miss Arvilla C. Woodworth Aug. 19, 1867, at Madison, Wis. Five children blessed this union, one boy and four girls, of whom one boy, Harry A. and two girls, Mrs. Mable Jasmer and: Miss. Flora, are survivors. Mr. Cheney came to Nebraska in 1857 but soon, returned to Iowa and engaged in the hotel business at Cedar Rapids. He after wards located at Creston, Iowa, and conducted a real estate business. In 1880 Mr. Cheney located at Neligh, Neb., and opened the first bank in Antelope county, the firm being Cheney & Adams. In 1881 he and Mr. Adams opened a bank at O'Neill. In 1882 Mr. Cheney located in Creighton and organized the Knox County Bank and in 1886 erected a beautiful brick in which the bank i s now located. The bank was reorganized in 1890 into a First National Bank and in 1895 changed to the Security Bank. Mr. Cheney was a very popular man being known by nearly every man, woman and child in Knox and Antelope counties. He was a good man for the al church and Masonic and K. of P. lodges and also a member of the order of Eastern Star. A large delegation of citizens and the secret orders escorted the remains from the station to the family residence. The funeral services were held Sunday 12 o'clock at the Episcopal church, Rev. J. C. lngersoll preached the discourse. The Masonic or took charge of the ceremonies at cemetery. There was a large delegation of Masons present from Plainview, Osmond, Wausa, Bloomfield, Niobrara, and other points. The three orders heretofore named marched in a body to the cemetery. At least 1500 people attended the funeral. The deceased leaves a wife and three children to mourn, who have the sympathy of the community. -------------------------------------------- CARD OF THANKS.
