Death was attributable to complications, which at her advanced age her physical capacity was unable to overcome. Mrs. Cheney was one of the few pioneers who remained. She, with her husband, cast their lot in Creighton many years ago and she remained through adversity and prosperity in the end. Her husband preceded her in death a greatly number of years ago. Mrs. Cheney was widely known and her many friends where enamored with her smiling charm and character. In her more intimate circle of friends, she was looked upon as an advisor and her prudent judgment and discernment of human character offer advantageous suggestions by which others well profited. Arvilla Cushman Woodworth, was born July 31, 1845 on a farm near Harrisburg, Pa., located in the old Meadville-Erie Turnpike. She resided here with her parents until 1856, when they moved west, settling at Rosen, Ill. She married George Edwin Cheney, August 19, 1867 at Madison, Wis. Shortly after they entered the hotel business at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, running The American House, one of the leading hotels of the city. Her husband's health failing, they moved onto a farm near Neven, Iowa. In 1868 and in 1869, they moved to Algona, Iowa to engage in the hotel business. In 1870 they went to Fontenelle, Iowa and in 1873, back to Algona. In 1876 after attending the Centennial Exposition at Philadelphia, they moved to Creston, Iowa and in 1880, settled in the then new west at Neligh, Nebr., where they remained two years and in 1882 moved to Creighton, where she resided until her death June 7, 1926 at the age of 80 years, 10 months and 6 days. She was a devout member of St. Mark's Episcopal church and a worker in the Guild, also a member of the Order of Eastern Star Lodge. She leaves to mourn her loss one son, Harry A. and two daughters, Mrs. Flora M. Fischer and Mrs. Mabel Jasmer of this city, also 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren and a host of friends, both in Creighton and elsewhere. Funeral services were held from the St. Mark's Episcopal church on Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock, in charge of Rev. Cave. A large concourse of friends was present to pay its last respects. The abundance of floral offerings in evidence attested the high esteem in which the deceased was held in this community. The remains were interred in the Greenwood cemetery. As a token of respect all business houses in Creighton were closed during the funeral hour. The News joins with friends of the family in extending condolences in a sincere manner to those who mourn the decease of a noble and loving mother.
