After mortally wounding Mrs. Goldie Bechtold, 46, firing four shots into her chest after surprising her in the kitchen of her home about 7:30 o'clock this morning. George Loe, 58, went to his own home at Park and Oak streets, there fired the last bullet from his .38 calibre revolver into his right temple. Mrs. Bechtold died at 8:10 a.m., shortly after being rushed to the Linvill Memorial hospital. Liver and Lung hemorrhages caused her death, according to Dr. B.P. Linvill, who rushed her into the operating room from the DeMoney ambulance which took her to the hospital. Two shots had entered each side of her chest. Loe and Mrs. Bechtold, widower and widow. had kept company for several years. A short time ago Mrs. Bechtold told Loe not to call at her home or attempt to see her at the Red Cross drug store where she had worked as a clerk for the past eight years. In connection with this she had mentioned to her family and close friends that Loe recently had become insanely jealous of her and that this jealousy extended even to male customers of the drug store where she worked. Weapon Police Relie The weapon with which Loe killed Mrs. Bechtold and then ended his own life was a .38 Colt police pistol, a relic of his employment by the city as a police officer. Neighbors of Mrs. Bechtold, who lived with her son, Glenn, at 408 West Spencer street, heard the four shots about 7:30 a.m. Mrs. Verne Nelson, South Walnut street, in the summer kitchen of her home, which is near the rear of the bechtold home, heard the shots and supposed that the sounds were caused by a small boy with a rifle or fire crackers. She reported that she started out the back door of her home to see whose child might be playing with firearms when saw Loe, his hand shoved into his side pocket, hurrying past the Bechtold garage which stands near the rear of the house. Remembering that she heard a screem from the Bechtold kitchen, she hurried across the back yards toward the Bechtold home. Loe, almost running up the alley which leads to Ellsworth street, saw her. Mrs. Nelson said. Seeing her going toward the Bechtold home he halted, seemed to take a step in her direction as if he was going to cross a garden. This frightened her and she made a move to retreat. Loe, if he had intended to harm Mrs. Nelson changed his mind, for he turned about and hurried up the alley. Goes To His Parked Car After reaching the top of the grade toward Ellsworth street he slowed to a leisurely walk, accoding to John Ellis, who was working at the Ellsworth street home of his sister, Mrs. Wilber Erne, Ellis who had walked to the rear door of the Erne home intending to get a drink of water, saw Loe walk to his car which he had parked headed west on Ellsworth street directly across the street from the Merl Fisher home. Getting in his car, Loe drove west on Ellsworth street, then turned north in the direction of his home at Park and Oak streets, according to Ellis. Ellis had previously seen Loe park his car on Ellsworth street and walk south through the alley toward Spencer street. He had supposed that Loe, a carpenter and cabinet maker was intending to work at the Fisher home. Suicide Shot Not Heard The suicide shot after loe reached his own home was not heard, an interview of neighbors brought to light. Mrs. Harry Osborn, who lives on Park street next door to the house in which Loe lived with his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Elisha Loe, said that she saw hin stop his car on the driveway to his garage and work-shop located between the Loe and Osborn homes. Mrs. osborn, who had been on her front porch, said shr heard Loe order his barking dog to lie down, then went to the porch of his home and sat down. The neighbor woman then went indoors and neither she nor her daughter, Maralee, who was asleep upstairs, heard the shot from Loe's garage with which he ended his life. Discovered by Officers The first Loe's neighbors knew of his suicide was when Chief of Police Omar Whitman and State Policeman brian Schang drove up to the Loe house searching for him. They found that he had gone inside his combination garage and workroom, closed the door so that it was just ajar. sat down in a chair and raised his revolver, fireing the last of its 5 bullets into his right temple. His slumped body was still in the chair. The body was kept closed in the garage until Dr. Park Huffman, of South Whitley, the county coroner, completed his examination. the revolver had dropped to the garage floor from Loe's relaxed fingers. In it were the shells from which the five shots had been fired four into Mrs. Bechtold and the one used for the suicide. Gasps Name of Assailant Mrs. Nelson, who had run to the kitchen door of the bechtold home after Loe made his hurried departure, saw Mrs. bechtold upon the kitchen floor and realized she had been shot. Other neighbor woman attracted by the sound of the four shots, came also and, met by Mrs. Nelson, they hurried back to walnut street where from the telephone at the Arnold Souder home they asked the telephone operator to send an ambulance for Mrs. Bechtold. Miss Julia Richardson, fiancee of Glenn Bechtold, on duty as telephone operator, recieved the call. She dispatched the DeMoney ambulance but the driver, not remembering that Mrs. Bechtold and her son had moved last fall to Spencer street from North Oak street went to the Oak street address first. Mrs. Richardson, after sendind the ambulance, called Mrs. Bechtold's son, Glenn, who had left at 7 o'clock to go to his work as office man at the Columbia City Beverage company. He hurried home and while he bent over his agonized mother she told him that Loe had shot her four times. the ambulance then arrived and she was hurried to the hospital where she died about ten minutes afterwards. Although losing much blood, she was able to repeat to Dr. Linvill the statement she had previously made to her son. Previously Threatened Her son said today that Loe had previously threatened his mother, once several days ago during the lunch hour of her employer, Frank Meitsler. Mrs. Bechtold informed her son that Loe had threatened to kill her, reporting the incident to her son that evening. Both she and her son discounted the threat as wild talk but her son took the precaution to inform police that if they ever got a call from the drug store to lose no time in answering it in person. Mrs. Bechtold, who had worked as a clerk in the drug store, during her evening hours at home obliged neighbors as a beauty operator. She had learned this trade in Denver, Colo., some years ago to supplement the family income since her late husband was incapacitated through chronic asthma. Set Loe Rites Rev. Paul E. Chalfant will officiate at the Loe rites to be held in the Presbyterian church at 10 a.m. Friday. The body, taken to Luckenbill & Sons Funeral Home, will be removed at 10 o'clock Thursday morning to the home of Loe's daughter, Mrs. Allen H. Becker, 348 North Chauncy street. Interment will be made in South Park cemetery in the Loe lot. Loe is survived by his son Elisha, with whom he lived and with whom he had worked as a carpenter; the daughter, Mrs. Becker; one brother, Firmer Loe, of South Whitley; five sisters, Mrs. Omar Whitman, Mrs. Charles Eissele and Mrs. Cecil Truman, all of columbia City; Mrs. Annie Harper. of New Haven, and Mrs. Valentine Wagner, of Marion. His wife, Mrs. Phoebe Finch Loe, died in 1930. He was 58 years old, born March 22, 1880. CC Post August 12, 1938, Page 3 Loe Rites At Local Church This Morning Funeral services for George Loe, 58, local contract-carpenter who took his own life Wednesday after fatally wounding Mrs. Goldie Bechtold, were conducted by the Rev. Paul E. Chalfant at 10 o'clock this morning in the Presbyterian Church. Music at the service in the church was furnished by Mrs. Shelley Stemen and Mrs. Newell Rice, accompanied by Mrs. Helen Aker. Hymns which they sang were "Still, Still With thee," and "In The Hour of Trial." Pallbearers were E. E. Erdmann, John M. Harris, Simon Gardner, M.E. Ennis, Clyde Rawley, and Eugene Bates. Flower bearers were David and Norman Harper and Willis Herendeen, all of New Haven; Jesse, Henry, and Ray Loe, of this city. Burial was made in South Park cemetery. Persons from out of the county who attended the service were Mrs. Charles Loe, Mrs. Lewis Clove, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Johnson, Millard Loe and Mrs. Paul Loe, all of Peru; George Finch, Sturgis Mich.; Mrs. Anna Harper, of New Haven; Mr. and Mrs. L.D. Hamilton, New Castle; Frank Loe, Hornbrook, Cal.; Mrs. H.N. Bascom, San Jose, Cal., and Mr. and Mrs. Valentine Wagner, of Marion.
