No words of mine can portray the shock to the family and to this entire community. Neighbors hastened to assist, and messages of sorrow came from all directions. Mr. Dilliner and Eldron were stacking wheat. When the storm approached Mr. Dilliner suggested that they go to the house, but the boy thought they had better take a small load and partially top the stack. Eldron and his little nephew, Arthur Courtney, were on the load, with Mr. Dilliner walking a short distance behind, when the flash came. He says, "I awoke to consciousness to find myself entirely turned around, and some part of my boy's clothing on my face. One horse was struggling to get up and the other was dead. As the little boy climbed down, I said to him, "Oh, Arthur, Eldron must be dead" and as quickly as possible I climbed up to find him so." Eldron's clothing was almost torn from his body and burning, and pieces were scattered everywhere. One shoe was torn from his foot. The bolt struck his forehead, ran down his right side, passed through the load and out along the wagon tongue, splintering it and killing the horse. Mr. Dilliner extinguished the fire before it burned the boy or the grain, then waited beside the dead while his daughter, Mrs. Eva Courtney, ran to S.O. Everley's for help. Eldron was born in Cloud county, August 1885, and was an obedient, industrious boy, the youngest son and a great help to his aging parents. He was very kind in disposition, and a boy who never cared to be away from home as many boys do. The funeral was preached at the Bethel church by Rev. Seamens Sunday, and the large room was packed by those wishing to pay the last tribute of respect to the departed. The casket was covered with flowers. Lying beneath them Eldron looked calm and peaceful as if asleep, and we can only say, "rest in peace." The remaining members of this stricken family are Ira of St. Louis; Justin, Alford and Rudie of Bethel, Mrs. Etta Risdon of Arizona; Mrs. Emma Rice, Mrs. Eva Courtney of Bethel, and Ida of Aurora. Mr. Sutcliff had the remains in charge. The pallbearers were young friends, Charley and Ben Haldeman, Howard and O.V. Everley, Lester Colton and Frank King. The text used was Prov. 27 c, 1 v. The beautiful hymn "We'll Meet Again" was sung at the grave. Appreciation We desire to thank the friends and neighbors who were so kind in assisting in the burial of our dear son and brother.
