George was born Nov. 20, 1934, in Cumberland. He was the son of the late Norman Franklin Geatz Sr. and Margaret (Elliott) Geatz. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Norman F. Geatz Jr. and John Phillip Geatz; and sister-in-law Kitty (Weaver) Stone. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Marianne (Weaver) Geatz; two sons, Todd Elliott Geatz and wife Kathryn, of LaVale, and Michael Corey Geatz and wife Lisa, of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; two daughters, Erin (Geatz) DeLong and husband David, of Cumberland, and Amy (Geatz) Heuay and husband Rob, of Richmond, Va.; and six beautiful grandchildren, Tyler and Casey DeLong, Kristen and Colin Geatz, and Ian and Paige Geatz. After graduating from LaSalle High School in 1953, George attended Potomac State College and the University of Maryland. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was a member of the Disabled Veterans of America. Upon returning home, George entered the family's restaurant business with his father, "Cotton" Geatz. Soon after, his brother Phil joined the restaurant, and the business grew. George served as the President of "Cotton" Geatz's Inc., for over 40 years. After being diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, an incurable bone marrow cancer, in 1996, George retired. Despite the cancer that he fought with courage and humor for 13 long years, George continued to find joy in doing the things he loved most - spending time with family and friends, gardening, and cheering on his grandchildren at soccer games. His faith helped him through his battle, and his family was beside him every step of the way. Much beloved, he will be greatly missed. In addition to his wife, children and grandchildren, he is also survived by four sisters, Jeanne Printy, of Sandusky, Ohio, Patricia Fitzpatrick and husband Henry, of Philadelphia, Pa., Margaret Wilt, of Cumberland, and Nancy Quinn, of Rockville; brother-in-law George W. Weaver and wife Rusha, of Shrewsberry, Pa., and brother-in-law Martin Stone, of Haymarket, Va.; three sisters-in-law, Linda (Weaver) Stitcher and husband Howard, of Cumberland, Mary Irene Geatz, of Cumberland, and Joan "Sis" Geatz, of Cumberland. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and many longtime friends, among them Dr. Jack Light, Dr. A. Leo Franklin, Jim Donahue, Ron Welsh, John Sulek and Fred Dobbs. George was a lifetime member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, where he served on the Parish Council. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, Alhambra Wamba Caravan 89, and the Upper Potomac Garden Club. He served on the advisory board of the Western Maryland Cancer Center, and was a member of the Cumberland Shade Tree Commission. He was recognized by the Forestry Board of Maryland for his contribution to the preservation of the Western Maryland Oak tree. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, scarpellifuneralhomes.com on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. There will be Alhambra and Christian Wake Services at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Pallbearers will be nephews from the Fitzpatrick, Printy, Quinn, Geatz, Stitcher and Stone families. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oncology Department at the Western Maryland Health System, 900 Seton Drive, Cumberland, MD 21502. These contributions are in honor of the numerous health care professionals who supported George on his last and longest journey, often giving him the strength he needed to persevere and find hope in times of darkness. For their sustenance, the Geatz family will be forever grateful."
