Born Dec. 5, 1935, he was the son of the late Norman Franklin Cotton Geatz Sr. and Margaret (Elliott) Geatz. He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law, James C. Wilt. Philip Geatz, 67, of Cumberland, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at his residence. Born Dec. 5, 1935, he was the son of the late Norman Franklin Cotton Geatz Sr. and Margaret (Elliott) Geatz. He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law, James C. Wilt. Phil was a 1955 graduate of LaSalle High School He then went to the University of Miami, having received a full athletic scholarship. Phil played, right end all four years at Miami. He served in the U.S. Army from 1960 to 1962. Phil was the fourth generation to join the family business, Geatz Restaurant, established in 1860, the restaurant is a well-known landmark in Cumberland. Upon Cottons retirement in 1978, Phil and his brother, George, purchased the business in 1999, Phils son, J.P. and wife, Brenda, joined the business, Phil was forever grateful for the community support provided to him and his family during the 2000 Flood disaster. Phil was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, where he had served on the Parish Council. He served as president of the Allegany County Liquor Dealers Association for many years. In addition, he was a member of the Maryland Liquor Dealers Association, Cumberland Outdoor Club and the Democrat Club. He belonged to the Maplehurst Country Club and served on their board of directors. Phil was on the Dapper Dan Executive Board, having been the recipient of the 1959 Dapper Dan Award. He had a deep interest in the Vicki Via Dotson Memorial Leukemia Foundation, where he assisted with their fundraising projects and charity golf tournaments. Phil was also very dedicated to the Lets Beautify Cumberland program. Phil married his high school sweetheart 45 years ago, Joan Sis Helene (Wilt) Geatz. He is also survived by his three children, John Philip J.P. Geatz Jr. and wife, Brenda, Cumberland; S. Eric Geatz and wife, Melissa, Cumberland, and Juli Greely and husband, Jay, Deerfield Beach, Fla.; two brothers, Norman F. Geatz Jr. and George E. Geatz, both of Cumberland; four sisters, Jeanne Printy, Sandusky, Ohio; Patricia FitzPatrick, Haverford, Pa.; Margaret Peg Wilt, Cumberland, and Nancy Quinn, Rockville; three grandchildren, Jordan and Ryan Philip Geatz, and Kamryn Greely; three step-grandchildren, Richard, Adam and Anthony McDonald; and his mother-in-law, Anna V. Aldridge, Cumberland. Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake Service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 8:45 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Wednesday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. James Kurtz, OFM, Cap, as celebrant. Interment will be in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap, where military honors will be accorded by the local combined veterans honor guard.
