He was 84. Mr Gomme had an aneurysm for the past two years which eventually brought him into the Almonte General Jan 6, his daughter-in-law Gail Gomme said Monday. He came home twice but had to return to the hospital, she added. "I had walked through the halls of power. I had been given power in the political realm, but my childhood had been my secret," Mr Gomme wrote in his 1993 memoirs. His father had abandoned his mother before his 1912 birth. Eight years later, he was sent by ship to Canada as a "home boy." He later wrote of his first glimpse of Canada; "I did not realize I was looking as the land of opportunity for me." Mr Gomme started his political career as a town councillor in 1949. As he outlined in his memoirs, he served as reeve in 1950, president of the chamber of commerce in 1952 and mayor in 1955. Lanark County residents elected him to provincial parliament in 1958 where he held a seat until 1971. he joined the cabinet in 1965, taking on the role of Minister of Highways from 1966 to 1971. Through his politics and his gentle lifestyle he affected many different lives. Even after retirement his hand was still felt in politics. When MPP Leo Jordan suffered heart problems during last June's election campaign, Mr Gomme came to his aid. He and Gary Houston hit the campaign trail, talking to people throughout the riding to help win votes for the conservative party. "I think he is best described as a leader and a Christian," Jordan said. "His faith in God gave meaning to life." Mr Gomme served as an example to Jordan about how to balance political life and family and how to treat constituents. "He said never forget to people when you end in office," Jordan added. "Whether you end up in cabinet or not, serve them well. Then you can go back." "He also warned me not to try to be in too many places and to be all things to all people," Jordan said, reflecting on a conversation he and Mr Gomme had right after the 1995 election. "You have to pace yourself, he said. Because of the demand, no matter how much you serve, the need never goes away." Former Conservative MP Paul Dick, who served this riding for 21 years, also spoke warmly about Mr Gomme. "He was a very shrewd guy who understood people and the dynamics of politics," Dick said. Mr Gomme nominated Dick in his first successful bid in 1972. dick said often turned to the former minister for advice. "He had a very strong ethical streak," Dick recalled. "He set an awfully high standard." He also remembered Mr Gomme's flair for public speaking. Robert France, one of his life-long friends, worked as a town clerk during Mr Gomme's year as mayor in 1955. "He was a good leader," France said. "He was a good honest chap who would do anything for you." As minister of Highways, Mr Gomme used to take France to Toronto in his "special Car" and introduce him to the "right people" when France needed to conduct business with the province. France said he last saw Mr Gomme Feb 29 when he stopped into the hospital for a visit. He asked the nurses if he could wake him to shake hands, for the last time. "I think he was prepared to die," France said."He's gone, God bless him." A subdued group of men met as usual Monday morning at Superior Restaurant to reminisce about their friend, who used to join them there for coffee. "He was a real gentleman," said Gary Houston, a friend of 50 years. "I don't know anyone that didn't like him. He was a great guy." Gomme stopped coming in late December when his health began to fail Houston added. He used to tell the group coming to meet them every morning "kept him young." Being a native of this town is worth as much to me as all the honours that have been bestowed on me," he said in a 1980 interview. Mr Gomme's deep love of his town and the people in it was returned fully. The silence of the "coffee club" speaks more eloquently than words. George Gomme will be sorely missed. Mr Gomme is survived by his son Bill (Gail) Gomme of Almonte and his daughter Jennifer (Earl) Davis of Jasper. He is also survived by five grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Rose in 1991, after 56 years of marriage..... The funeral is Thursday at 11 a.m. at St Paul's Anglican Church. Interment will be at the Auld Kirk Cemetery in the spring.
