After a 61 year career of safety, "Cap" Oshel was retired from Ash Grove Lime & Portland Cement Co., Dec. 30, 1949. After a 61 year career of safety, "Cap" Oshel was retired from Ash Grove Lime & Portland Cement Co., Dec. 30, 1949. His retirement marked the end of a career in which he did not lose a day of work because of an accident. He began work with the Ash Grove in Everton, Mo., in 1889. He was employed at Galloway, Mo., for a time, then went back to Everton as general manager. He was then made assistant superintendent at Ash Grove, Galloway and Everton. When the Chanute plant was organized, Oshel was sent here a quarry foreman in 1907. Some of the operations he performed or directed without accidnet were loading battery shots, loading heavy machinery, moving shovels, operating drills and building track. He was born July 10, 1865, at Lafayette, Ind. When he was 10 his family moved to Neosho Falls to engage in farming. He farmed for a time then went into construction work before joining Ash Grove. He married Mrs. Joanna Ogden in 1916 at Iola, and she survives. Other survivors are a daughter by a former marriage, Mrs. Mabel Myer, Lynwood, Calif; five stepchildren, Jim Dodson, Lynnwood, Mrs. Edna Davidson, Peetz, Colo., Mrs. Edith Bruce, Dodge City, S. D. Gallion, Sartoga, Wyo., and Leslie F. Gallion, Chanute. Mr. Oshel was a member of the Firt Baptist Church. Funeral arrangement will be announced later by Koch Memorial Home.
