The 1870 US Census Report shows the family living in Buffalo, Iowa with the father listed as a farmer. George's mother died when he was a little less than 3 years old, and family lore says the children were sent to friends and family to raise. In 1880 George age 11 lived with the John Newlin family as an adopted son in Brown Township, Linn County, Iowa. His father, John, lived in Viola about 5 miles away and worked as a railroad section hand. George and his siblings were: -Robert S. The family is listed as: John age 40, Eliza age 34, R. S. age 13, Thos age 12, A. L. age 9, John age 6, Wm age 4 and George age 1. The 1880 US Federal Census Report shows George living in Brown, Linn, Iowa, with the Newlin family: John A. Newlin age 32, Helen M. Newlin age 24 and Delbert Newlin age 6 months. George is listed as "adopted son" on the census report, although he goes by his birth name so it may not be a legal adoption. George married Aletha Belle "Letha" Penn in 1898 at the age of 29. Together they had four children: Retta Belle b. 1894, m. Neal Larson Oren Wayne b. 1897 m. Doris Hart Roy Richard b. 1899 m. Eva Shaffer Darold George b. 1907 m. Hilda Stentz The 1900 US Federal Census Report shows George and Letha living in Brown, Iowa with their first three children where George farmed for a living. They lived next door to Letha's brother, Richard Penn, his wife, Mary, and their four children; Emma, Blanche, Erwin and Lola. The 1910 US Federal Census Report shows the family still living in Brown, Iowa with George's brother-in-law still living near by. In 1920 the family can still be found farming in Brown, Iowa with the three youngest still living at home. By 1930 only the youngest, Darold, is living at home in Brown, Iowa with George and Letha, and both father and son are listed as farmers. George died May 3 1937 in Brown, Iowa and was buried at the Wilcox Cemetery in Fairview, Iowa. His wife, Letha, died 9 years later and was laid to rest at the same cemetery under a shared headstone.
