Description	:	G. F. "Gimp" Carrington George F. "Gimp" Carrington, 86, of Crisfield, died Monday, Feb. 28, 1994 at Tawes Nursing Home of heart failure. Born Aug. 5, 1907 in Waterbury, Conn., he was a son of the late Lewis and Annie Dwyer Carrington. A magna cum laude graduate of Washington College in 1925, he majored in history and was outstanding in both basketball and football. He then came to Crisfield High School primarily to develop a sports program, spending nine years as a coach and teacher. "Gimp" Carrington, 86, of Crisfield, died Monday, Feb. 28, 1994 at Tawes Nursing Home of heart failure. Born Aug. 5, 1907 in Waterbury, Conn., he was a son of the late Lewis and Annie Dwyer Carrington. A magna cum laude graduate of Washington College in 1925, he majored in history and was outstanding in both basketball and football. He then came to Crisfield High School primarily to develop a sports program, spending nine years as a coach and teacher. In 1938 he went to Frostburg State College to coach and was later inducted into the college's athletic Hall of Fame. During World War II he was with the 99th Division and became a Red Cross field instructor in the European Theater. He returned to CHS in 1946 to become principal, serving in that capacity until 1960. As principal he taught and coached athletics, plus set the stage for a new high school in 1954. On Dec. 13, 1957 Crisfield observed "Gimp Carrington Day" for his many endeavors to education and athletics. In 1960 he became a supervisor of high schools in Somerset County and in 1971 was made assistant superintendent of schools. He retired in 1976. Carrington was elected to the Washington College Hall of Fame and the Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame. He served as president of the Maryland Athletic Association and was active in state high school tournaments. He was a member of St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church in Westover and the Crisfield Country Club. In 1937 he married the former Mary Catherine Sterling of Crisfield. She died March 30, 1985. He is survived by two brothers, Frank Carrington of Frostburg, and Jack Carrington of Boynton Beach, Fla.; a sister, Grace Schum of Waterbury; two nephews, Raydie James Sterling of Crisfield and Dale Brittingham of Salisbury. A funeral service will be held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at Bradshaw and Sons Funeral Home in Crisfield. The Rev. Raymond Weisman will officiate and interment will be in Asbury Cemetery in Crisfield. The family has requested no flowers and contributions may be made to St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church, Pocomoke, Md. 21851, or to the Lower Somerset Ambulance & Rescue Squad, Box 406, Crisfield, Md. 21817.
